Usefulness of Vitamin D supplements for bone health

Posted by windyshores @windyshores, Jul 28, 2022

I was surprised to read this one study on Vitamin D supplementation. I would expect a recommendation to wear less sunscreen! Of course, the opinion may change in the medical establishment, as it often does. See below:

That daily vitamin D pill doesn't lower risk of bone fractures, study finds
It has seemed like such a good idea for such a long time, but a large new study in NEJM again knocks down vitamin D taken as a supplement or part of a multivitamin, concluding it does not help prevent broken bones. When our bodies make the vitamin from sunlight or eat it in food, yes, it helps keep bones healthy. But daily doses of supplemental vitamin D did not significantly lower total bone fractures, nonvertebral fractures, or hip fractures in a study of 25,871 adults, more than half of whom were women, and one-fifth were Black.

“The key here is that it takes only small to moderate amounts of vitamin D to improve bone health to maintain bone health,” study leader JoAnn Manson of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who has led multiple vitamin D studies, told STAT’s Elissa Welle. “And more is not necessarily better.”

Jozer: I thought that estrogen supplementing was a good idea as well. However, it appears as though that's not suggested for someone over a certain age. I'm not asking you to reveal your age but I initially went that route and I'm glad I stopped it. Remember, anything synthetic is not always a good thing.

Yup to jeepgirl; Thats what I kind of thought. I went through menopause 17 years ago (I'll reveal! 67 now) and there was no discussion of HRT at that time. There was also no discussion about bone health after menopause, no dexa (not till 65!) etc. As I had zero symptoms with menopause so nothing to treat I guess. I assume there will be no estrogen in my future but I am lining up every medical pro to talk to about this osteoporosis diagnose/treatment as the next treatment is the once a year reclast infusion which scares me to death.

Jozer: First of all, it (osteoporosis) creeps up slowly and you don't notice it until it's there or whenever you get the dexa scan. Please be very careful taking any meds for this condition, and I do mean ANY. You should be scared. Once you start putting them in your body it cannot be reversed. We have to be our own advocate if we want to win this battle. Please refer to Drs Laura Kelly's and Helen Bryman Kelly's book 'The Healthy Bones' Nutrition Plan and Cookbook. The issue of treating this condition is ONLY through food and supplementation (until I can get the food I need) for me. Then once I've accomplished making homemade bone broth, etc. I will be consuming that instead of supplementing the vitamins, mincrals I need for maintenance.

Jozer: Reclast is a bisphosphonate and there are serious side effects. I don't know about you but I need my jaw. Please be sure to do your research! Take care and best wishes to you!
