Functional Nausea
Hi I’m not sure if anyone suffers from Functional Nausea. Recently, I had an appt with a gastroenterologist. Her diagnosis is Functional Nausea. I’ve been scoped in the past. I’ve been battling this disorder for a few years. I battle it everyday with a loss of appetite plus heat in my esophagus. Even though, I’m nauseated, I am hungry at the same time. I’ve been on antidepressants in the past. Really, not taking too many meds. I’m on a ppi, blood pressure meds, amitriptyline and lorazepam. No anti nausea meds help, nor ginger and peppermint. I’ve been on bland foods also. I see a therapist. I’ve researched vagus nerve devices might help. My therapist wanted me to discuss this with my pcp. These devices are very expensive. Not sure if Medicare would pay for it. I’ve been working with my therapist to manage my stress, depression and anxiety. Has anyone dealt with Functional Nausea? Has anyone used a vagus nerve device for nausea? If so, did it help? Thank you for any suggestions and info regarding this.

Your medications could be causing nausea. Did you review them with your pharmacist?
Did you have a HYDA scan of your gallbladder to see if there is dysfunction causing your symptoms? This is called biliary dyskinesia (I have it).
1. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23932-biliary-dyskinesia. You may want to talk to your gastroenterologist about this. I was treated for esophagitis and gastritis after my endoscopy but still had symptoms when they finally diagnosed me with biliary dyskinesia.

I had an MRI for the Vargus nerve last year and Medicare did cover it..my nausea wasn't caused by that (have pyloric stenosis)..the neurologist said my neck was a mess..I told hiim ..I didn't even feel it.. digestive problems were so painful.. he looked astounded...but it was covered by Medicare and ChampVA..you might ask Medicare ..it was an easy test..compared to the gastro tests!! Just 45 minutes in a tube ..no sneezing.. I had a cold or something so I prayed! If you move or cough or sneeze. they have to start al over!! Praying you get some answers!!
I have been sick for seven years with nausea, and nobody could figure it out. I am trying to get into Mayo so many times and are put on some damn waiting list. They say that they want to help people that can’t figure out what’s going on with them, but they sure don’t make it easy. I’ve never heard of an MRI of the vagus nerve, but maybe I’ll have to check it out. Why haven’t one of the many Gastro doctors I’ve gone to outside Mayo mention that. So for the original poster I feel for you too I understand. I feel like I can’t go on feeling like this. A complaint should be put into Mayo for keeping people like me not able to get appointments! I’m sure there’s many people out there that are just going there regularly for their G.I. appointments that aren’t as serious as some of us! They need to help us!
Medicare is one of the easiest insurers as it does to have a profit motive. The medical directors tend to be very patient friendly. I have found the local one very open to appeals. In fact he gave me his cell number so I can be a step ahead of the usual reviewers. On my appeal letters I note that I discussed it with him and reviewer should contact him before any denial.
Thanks for replying about Medicare.
Unfortunately, I have to be sedated for an MRI. I have to discuss this with my pcp. Suffering everyday. Not sure what happened. Ever since pandemic, our daughter getting married and our divorced son moved back in with us. It all happened at the same time. Very stressful situation in our home. I’ve been told it’s all coming from stress, depression and anxiety. I second guess myself. Thank you for your prayers.
I understand. It seems like no one cares. I wouldn’t go to Mayo. For one too far. A friend of mine is a breast cancer survivor. She went to Mayo in Minnesota. Then her adult daughter got breast cancer and it metastasized. She also went to Mayo. They didn’t save her. She passed away. Waiting lists are ridiculous. This is my opinion. I hope they help you or someone helps. I’m still waiting about 5 years.
Nausea cured!
I suffered from nausea, off and on, for years. Tried every drug, test, specialist, almost had my gall bladder removed (I have stones and a few attacks).
Then one day as I was bemoaning my fate the nurse practitioner asked me what I drank, my daily so-to-speak.. I told her I didn’t like water but I drank a lot of San Pelligrino. She suggested I stop and BINGO I’ve been nausea free ever since. It’s been years.
It’s great. I drink water most of the time. Apple juice sometimes. I just started drinking almond milk because my vitamin d is low. Started taking vitamin d drops recently. The nausea has been there way before this change. Thanks for replying.
Oh my!! I am so sorry to hear about all that has happened to your family!! My niece can't stand enclosed spaces and can't do an MRI because of that.. I just prayed and hung on... it was 45 minutes. along time if you can't stand being in there..you may have other things that are causing the nausea..just being sick all the time is extremely stressful..I stress all day about what to eat.. and people don't understand.. but if I eat the wrong thing.. bad results.. your feeling are valid.. don't let the doctors tell you that "it's just stress"or anxiety..I take Zofran 8 mg disolving and promethazine currently as needed for nausea..(along with other stomach meds..) you can find scriptures to help you by googling and they will come up..standing with you in faith for insight ..and wisdom..here's one for those doctors.. Proverbs 3;4 So thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man..sometimes the doctors are the problem...Good bless you precious lady!!
