My spouse has been having pressure and or pain in his upper right quadrant off and on for a while. I thought it was his gallbladder. Told him to go to his Dr. Now he is having itching and the off n on pain. Can it be related? Is it his gallbladder?

@mamimac
Welcome to Mayo Connect, it could be gallbladder or something else. You are right that it needs to be checked out by his doctor.

I found that when I had gallbladder problems it took time to diagnosis. When I had first attack, I went to ER thinking I was having a heart attack. They never checked gallbladder. Heart was OK. I followed up with provider and gallbladder was not even mentioned.

Next attack I had was able to see provider while still having symptoms and I was scheduled for surgery to remove gallbladder.

My attackes were directly related to what I ate. First attack was after eating out for breakfast and it was greasy. Also fried food would trigger symptoms. Does certain food bring on pain?

Do not ignore and know signs of heart attack. Gallbladder is on right and heart on left, but if in doubt, go to ER to make sure not heart attack.

Can you convince your husband to see a doctor?

I had my gallbladder removed about 12 years ago. I don't recall itching, but certainly a ton of pain right before my surgery.

@roch made some good points about seeing a doctor.

How is he doing today?
