Genetic studies

Posted by gregoria @gregoria, 2 days ago

My neurologist after 5 years of neuropatic pain in both legs and hands and no cause found so far, (I have some autoinmune issues found such as Hassssimoto and autoinmune gastritis , gluten sensibility, etc but nothing which can explain the neuropatic pain.)
has determined to make a genetic study, I don't know if this is worth It..Has anybody gone through the same?

Hello @gregoria, I can understand wanting to find the cause of the neuropathic pain in your legs and hands. I only have the numbness in my legs with no pain and have also don't know the cause just that I have idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy. I did do some genetic testing but I didn't have the one that looks at all of the gene variants that can affect the different medications used to treat conditions. There are some related discussions that you might find helpful if you are trying to make a decision on the testing.

I have had genetic testing for my non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy. It didn’t reveal much at all.

gregoria, it's worth the effort; will insurance bear the cost.

Even if it doesn't explicate the cause of the peripheral neuropathy, it can give you insight on other aspects of your well being.
I don't mind the physician-guessing. but always prefer the science. Plus your testing will contribute to a data base which will help other people in the struggle.

Hello Gregoria,
From what I have recently read, genetic testing will look into the possibility of heredity and might explain what you're experiencing. No, I have not gone through it but I feel you should research it more before you make a decision. I'm sure there are scientifically oriented medical resources out there on the subject.
Best of luck and take care,
gus
