Hi
So 2022 jan rolled over in bed got a compression fracture in my spine t8. Went thru breast cancer 2024 2 surgeries radiation treatment. Apr 28 2 more fractures t9 and t10. I am devastated. I did nothing . Could the radiation have caused my osteoporosis to get worse. I can't believe i am going thru this 3 yrs later.

Sue, I have asked same questions going through breast cancer 24 years ago and lived with osteoporosis since and I know my chemo definitely accelerated or caused my osteoporosis. I also had radiation and think my heart.calcium scores being so extremely high had to do with radiation though no doctor will address that.
Radiation can definitely affect our bones depending on how it was done. Maybe you can get more answers by asking your radiologist or oncologist. I was told my radiation would be targeted at only breast tissue but I now wonder how accurate that statement was.
I am sorry for all that is happening with you but you aren’t alone and so many nice people on this site are so helpful. It’s scary I know and after a breast cancer battle, it is even harder but you can do this for you are already a warrior. Keep in touch please.

Hi
Thanks for the support. I was told the same thing but I can't see how it would not affect your bones. I was doing great. It took a yr to recover from the 1st fracture. I think as survivor's if this happens our physio treatments shld be covered. I am in canada and there are only 2 treatment centre's that are government covered . I can't get in those until end of June. So I am going to have to pay 80.00 a visit. It's so ridiculous. They shld have a seniors rate.

Are you referring to physical therapy for your fractures?
Be sure it is someone educated in spinal therapy. I think I got two fractures from therapy is why I mentioned that. I’m now even scared of therapy.
Are you on any bone medicine for now?

What kind of therapy caused your fractures? I am doing P.T. now for back pain and was given exercises that seem to be helping. My PT therapist says she is experienced in dealing with patients with osteoporosis. (X-rays didn't show any fractures). I am not on any bone medicines even tho my dr recommended them.

Hi
Yes I start physio tomorrow. I was already in physio for my neck so we'll be doing both. And yes she's an excellent p t. Yes I see an endocrinologist for the past 3 yrs. I have zoledronic acid by I.v. every june. I just sent all the reports to my endocrinologist today. My naturopath wants to put me on A bone builder supplement from AOR so I sent my Dr the ingredients yo see if he is OK with it.

Thanks for the reply. I am interested in learning about the bone supplement you mentioned and what you find out about it. Has anyone suggested any osteoporosis drugs?

Hi
I get a bisphosphonate called zoledronic acid once a yr by I.v. The weird thing is my spine bone density has improved alot my first fracture 3 yrs ago had improved from 40% to 30% . My overall spine density was better. I am not understanding why I fractured again.
