Three Months Post RARP
I hadn't really thought too much about it but today is precisely three months since RARP. I'm happy to report that everything is still in working order with no significant side effects so far.
The only thing that still throws me is the perineal discomfort that still flares up now and then. Last night I wasn't doing anything in particular, just watching TV and it started pinging decently for a little bit. Generally the only discomfort is if I wait too long to go to the bathroom, that pressure from either the bladder or [particularly] the bowels rings my bell.
Outside of that I still have some incision "pings" now and then, mostly the last one that reopened and I had to pack for two months until it finally closed up. They do all sometimes itch like crazy, which is different from the last time when he used the same incisions for my kidney, so I attribute this to age, re-use of incisions or a combo of the two.
Due to ab pain I have to really monitor my workouts and not hit my core too hard, otherwise I'm on Tylenol for a couple days until my abs are happy with me again.
Overall, while I give prostate cancer 0 out of 5 stars on Yelp, RARP is a 3.5.

I'm 70 years old and 10 months post RARP. Yeah, the occasional perineal pings discomfort stuck with me for a good 6 or 7 months. There's one seated bench press at the gym whose small seat particularly gave me a perineal ping unless I sat down very very gently. I assume it was both it's size and the angle of the back rest that resulted in pressure when I sat down to cause the perineal pings. I'm glad to say at 10 months that's no longer an issue. Best wishes.
Did you spend time in the gym shortly (month or so) after you had the surgery? Just wondering if you exercised too much and that’s what caused the incision to open up. I’ve never heard of that happening before. Sorry to hear about the incision “pings”, I wonder if it’s because they reused the spot. You should at least ask the doctor if he’s heard of it.
In my robotic surgery, they only had four small incisions that they worked everything in and out of. There wasn’t really much, maybe two stitches each, is that what opened up, or did they need a larger incision?
Good to hear you’re so positive about doing it now. Pressure off.
That incision was interesting. It opened on a fairly easy walk around the neighborhood, and my doctor told me they had a hell of a time getting it to close in the first place because there's a vein there that kept bleeding like a stuck pig. I think it's a combo of that plus walking. You've never really gotten intimate with an incision until you have to pack about 12" of gauze strips in there to keep it from closing so it can heal from the bottom up!
I am so happy to hear that you are doing so well Survivor : ) !!! You are really just 3 mos post op and things are still "connecting" and healing. Biologically speaking the itch is very similar to pain signal and that is why pain usually transitions to itch when things are healing and it is usually the last phase 🙂 and it also indicates that healing is still in progress. A lot of nerve endings get cut in skin as well as in pelvic area and sometimes body needs some time to "rearrange" and connects things back. Sometimes small scar tissue can form and cause some discomfort but it usually also resolves with time. You are sooo early in your recovery and doing great - cheers to that : )))) and thanks for keeping us posted about your results .
I’m 4.5 weeks after RARP. Yesterday I walked 7.5 miles over the course of the day. played 9 holes last week. I feel fine with no pain at all. No lifting yet just light stretching. 62yrs old. I got myself in decent shape before surgery 3/26th. Still leaking a bit but improving ( Catheter out 3.5 weeks). I’ve been going to pelvic PT which has been helpful. Follow up visit 7/10th at NYU Langone to review 1st psa ( end of June). 🤞. Btw I lost about 15lbs through this journey but gained a few back. No sugar, alcohol, red meat, anything processed, no dairy. Following Mediterranean diet.. inflammation all gone. No pain from surgery.. this was not an easy surgery by any means and I commend those in their 70’s who chose surgery. 💪. Wishing you all speedy recovery.
I'm 5.5 weeks after RARP and still feeling pretty significant pain in the perineal area as well as the rectum. The pain is constant and OTC pain-killers don't seem to help much. I also still have symptoms consistent with a UTI, especially, terrible burning when I urinate. I met with my Urologist who had me tested for a UTI, but it came back negative. I'm 55 and was in very good shape prior to surgery which was on 3/20. The catheter was removed back on 3/28. I also have mild leaking from time to time, especially when lifting something heavier than I should or standing from a seated position for a while. Otherwise, I think I'm doing pretty well. I had my first PSA test on 4/24 and it came back < 0. My weight has gone up by about 3-5 lbs. depending on the day, since surgery. I also did not have any pain from the surgery, except the catheter. I haven't tried any special diets, but mainly sticking to lean proteins and vegetables. My Dr still does not want me lifting anything over 20 lbs. for another 3 weeks, which is killing me. All of you who have posted have been an inspiration to me and have helped me along in this journey. I wish you all the best!
