PSMA Pet Scan 1 week after biopsy, is that too soon?

Posted by pjsatz @pjsatz, 2 days ago

Is it too soon to have a PSMA PET Scan 1 week after biopsy or how long would be good to wait? Biopsy was Gleason 8 with 4 of 12 nodes positive 2 at 8, 1 at 6, 1 at 7, (largest was 9mm - Gleason 8).

Has anyone had false positive outside of prostate due to scan too soon after biopsy? Thank you

I'm no expert in this part of the treatment, but I don't see how one would have an effect on the other. The scan is to look for possible metastasis of the prostate cancer in different parts of the body. The biopsy just checks the prostate.

What triggered my scan was a biochemical recurrence. In your case I'd suspect it's the Gleason score.

Regarding the biopsy, there’s not likely anything introduced that would change the outcome that I can think of.

I don't think the PSMA scan should be affected by the Biopsy. You should drop your Urologist an email or call the office to confirm that. I had to wait a few weeks for my bone scan and MRI not due to my biopsy but that's the earliest I could get scheduled. My insurance rejected the PSMA test twice from my Urologist/surgeon so I had two tests performed instead of only the PSMA. Very frustrating at the time. I view getting in early for the PSMA as a good thing since you most likely will have no spread and then you and your medical staff can determine which course of treatment is best for you. I'd definitely talk to both an Oncologist and Surgeon and get the pros and cons of both. I chose surgery and haven't had any issues with incontinence. Good luck, you will do well.

Hi, I wish I can help more but I do not have much knowledge about that so I Googled and found this link. It seems that it will not effect PSMA , but please do some more research and ask your doctor also since I am by no means versed in protocols for PSMA. We had to wait about 6 weeks to get PSMA and we wish we could have had it sooner.

My doc told me for redoing MRI you will have to wait for at least 6 weeks after biopsy. Not sure on PSMA. Google says no need to wait.

I would encourage you to go to the PSMA appt. ASAP you are very lucky to get in that quick. I had to wait 3 weeks between the time I go my biopsy results and the PSMA and the waiting for me was the hardest.

I could drive the type of treatment you have. Git er done.

Thank you all, appreciate your help. I have some concern of bleeding from the biopsy influencing the scan results outside the prostate, but am fortunate to have the scan available.
