Hi there, just finished reading an article that recommends L-Glutamine to help with "leaky gut" that allows partially digested food and other items to leak out of the digestive system to areas where they are harmful. L-Glutamine helps to heal the lining of the gut. It is especially helpful when we are not doing well health-wise, such as after surgeries etc.
Hi: Can you tell me the antibiotics and the sequence? I’ve done Xifaran for two weeks a few times. Initially worked for about 6 months but now, only works for about 1-2 weeks and back again. Thanks!
Hi Marylandbob,
Sorry to hear that Xifaxan has stopped effectively treating SIBO for you. You should talk to your GI and consider a dual treatment of Xifaxan + oral neomycin, for example, for two weeks or longer, to really get on top of things. In addition, talk to your doctor about a strategy to avoid the recurrence of SIBO if possible, like pro-kinetic agents. Good luck.
I should have said that it has been both Xifaxan and Neomycin together.
Right now I’m working on a low Fodmap diet and I’ll see a dietician familiar with SIBO on May 13. I don’t know about pro-kinetic agents, so I’ll be looking that up. Thanks for the tip!
I just found out that the results of a bresthe tests show that I have SIBO! Can any one recommend an herbal treatment for it? I looked up Siboprin however don’t know if it is effective. Thank you, Lori
Hi,
With SIBO it will need strong antibiotics to kill it, playing around with anything else is likely to strengthen it or delay recovery. It is a particularly nasty infection/bug that is best dealt to as soon as possible. I found it was not even possible to starve it out. I'm now permanently on antibiotics to stop me slipping back into SIBO.
Cheers
Thank you! Because I have had a terrible reaction to antibiotics, i.e. room spinning and crawling to the bathroom to throat up and not being able to get up from the floor for hours, I’ve decided to NOT take that route again!
Blessings, Lori
Hi,
I have that fight with all medications but when SIBO gets to the point I thought would die, I had to suck it up and mitigate my health. The meds are not pleasant but that is all that will kill off SIBO. It is amazing what you can put up with when you have no alternative. Had they not worked then the alternative is hugely expensive and more aggressive with a special formula diet. It is just a 2 week course with a modified diet. They can prescribe anti nausea medication and anti vertigo medication which I was grateful for. I got to the point with SIBO that I could not eat or drink without an explosive reaction, the reaction to the medication was the lesser of two evils for sure.
Good luck.
Cheers
I don’t have it as bad as you did! Thank God!
My GI doctor also has it and is open to me taking anything other than antibiotics! He has had it since twenty years old and takes a prebiotic! He’s very smart and is at Mass. General Hospital and used to work at Deaconess Hospital in Boston! Thank you for your replies!
Neem and oregano oil and garlic are a couple of natural things to take. Another may be diatomaceous earth. If you go that route be very careful to
1. Wear a mask so you don’t breathe in any of the fine dust. Can cause lung problems.
2. Buy only food grade.
Diatomaceous earth is marketed as a wellness product. There is very limited evidence that diatomaceous earth is safe or effective. Speak with a healthcare professional if you’re considering diatomaceous earth. They could help you decide if it’s right for you and suggest any alternatives.
