Welcome @ron71, That sounds awful. If I understand you correctly, the big toe doesn't hurt at all when you are wearing your shoes. Have you seen a podiatrist or other foot specialist? Did you injure the big toe?
ron71, you are due for an xray. John suggests a podiatriast where you might get the fastest service. It seems that the joint is not holding the toe in correct alignment, but the shoe is.
The symptoms you describe could be related to gout, which is caused from a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. I've use allopurinol daily and for flare-ups, you can take colchicine. Both are prescription drugs.
thamks will talk to my podiatrist when back in for a trim job...
ok used to have gout and used to be on allopurinol daily, thanks for bringing back that idea.
no no injury to toe, yes on podiatrist, I have always went thru house barefoot, so he suggested me wearing crocs around the house which helps but still would like to know what issue it is, especially since I am a diabetic
After 3 episodes of gout, I was taking both of those medications to prevent it from coming back. Now I'm only taking allopurinol to control the uric acid level in my blood.
Gout has to be one of the most painful conditions I've ever had to deal with.
I agree that gout has to be one of the most painful conditions to deal with. I started taking 300mg of allopurinol. Now I take 75mg (1/4 tablet) for maintenance. It seems to work well, as long as I don't drink more than one glass of red wine. Seems like too much red wine will increase my chances of a flareup.
I don't drink, so that's not an issue.
