Do You Get the Impression You Are Not Believed by Others…

Posted by SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66, Apr 16 12:09am

When you tell your “story” do you feel like others think you are lying?
For example, you go to a new doctor, give them your long list of medical situations and you get the feeling you are not believed.

Or you tell someone a true, but unusual experience you have had. You get that side glance, squinting eyes look…you can tell they doubt your story.

It happens to me, what about you?

This supportive comment gave me an idea SusanEllen66. How about writing some of these things down in a journal or a bit of memoir? You can express yourself freely without worrying about how anyone reacts. It might be helpful!

@mir123 I am in the mild stage of dementia (FTD) if I am going to do it, it has to be now.

Now is a good time for writing, if you enjoy the process. Wishing you all the best.

I also have quite a story about my childhood which I rarely share: born in the Soviet Union to a family of underground Protestant church leaders. My dad spent 8 years in the gulags, my grandfather was executed during Stalin’s rule. My family came to America after my dad and four other Soviet dissidents were exchanged for two Soviet spies during Jimmy Carter’s administration. You should see people’s faces when I summarize my childhood! I keep most of the facts to myself and just say that I was born and grew up in Kyiv, Ukraine. lol

That definitely happens to me. Sometimes in my life it is a group of people that don't believe me. Sometimes people do it intentionally (like what low quality characters they are). Sometimes when I told someone something, like I met this interesting person, they were like "Oh yea, where do they live!?" as if saying "I don't believe you. You have to prove it.". The fact is though the truth is the truth no matter what anyone else thinks. You'll always come out far ahead if you tell the truth. Never exaggerate either.

@robertwills you have written before about groups of people.
Groups. How does one have a group of people, who each have the same negative, distrusting, opinion of what you say?
You must be a Kindergarten teacher, a prison warden, a police detective, or a church pastor.

@mir123 I’m trying to do things like that. It’s tough because my energy level is low. There are so many things I “should” be doing, and things I love to do, but my enthusiasm is going away.

You definitely should write down all your interesting and unusual stories. I’ve written about many fun adventures and put them in a binder for my son to have. I wish my parents and grandparents would have done that for me.

I have had “unusual” happenings in my family over the last 70 years.
Telling someone your personal story involving murder, a precocious, in a negative way, child; emotionally abusive adults, winning a prestigious award (Emmy), having a very rare disease, child in prison, child dead (overdose), a child autism, sales awards, owning a recording studio, being related to many government officials, and European royalty (King Henry V111) and all his wives.

Every one of them is true.

I feel that I have a “credibility'” problem. I find it insulting because I am an honest person and have no reason to lie.

And it's hard when you only have 15 minutes to elaborate and most of those minutes the doctor is looking at his computer plugging in what you are saying. I love it when they bill the insurance company 30 minutes for the visit and I barely got 15.

I had to drive 35 mins yesterday to see my cardiologist. He spent less than 5 min w me. I have Marfan Syndrome which is a connective tissue disorder. I've had 2 open heart surgeries and I'm 55.
I have an abnormal EKG
and sub clavian dissection and abdominal aortic aneurysm. He ordered no echo or EKG. Which I was having at least once per year. Now I haven't had an echo in 2 years and EKG over a year ago.

I feel your pain. I keep everything written down on a sheet of paper. My meds, my conditions and my surgeries and my allergies are all on one piece of paper. I just hand it to the doctor and let them figure it out.

I hate it when they dismiss you. But I don't mind trying to find a new doctor anyway. I'd like to have a doctor that listens.
