That's a rough story, and I know many of us have gone through the same with our pets. An animal can't understand or give informed consent, either to aggressive treatment or to prolonged life, so it's in us to make the decision for them.

For us humans, in Canada and some other countries, we have the option of choosing MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) when a medical panel agrees that things are beyond hope.

I've already decided not to take that path if things don't work out for me — I plan to see this journey through to the end, wherever that takes me — but I understand and respect people who do make the MAID choice for themselves.
