I have tried stiff "supportive shoes such as NB 990s, Brooks Ariel/Beast and Brooks Addiction, but find that my foot is happier in a more flexible shoe, such as Nike Freerunner. Do you have a particular brand of barefoot shoes that you like? I will check into Keen Newports - thanks for the tip.

No, I have several different brands... Leguano ($$$), Hike, Saguaro and a couple of no name brands. Some have a slightly thicker sole that is a bit more comfortable on hard or uneven ground (they are all much thinner soled and more flexible than a sketcher). I am not sure I would wear them hiking unless it was a really short, easy hike. I would switch to my Keens for that. The theory is barefoot shoes force your feet to be more active and aware (instead of being cradled in an orthotic). I do find they have improved my balance.
