How many here developed an inguinal hernia after Prostate surgery?

My wife was tyrannical making sure I did not overexert for my first 6 weeks post op and even then I was very careful not to overdo. Yet I developed an inguinal hernia anyway. The studies show this happens about 15-20% of the time depending on the surgery being robotic or open. Was I just unlucky or did many of you develop inguinal hernias too? And if you developed one, did you follow up with surgery to repair it?

1 Postoperative IH occurred in 39 (7.5%) of 558 groins. from https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6979555/

2.We included 54 studies with a total of 101,687 patients. The estimated incidence of inguinal hernia was 13.7% (95% CI 12.0–15.4) after open retropubic radical prostatectomy, 7.5% (95% CI 5.2–9.8) after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and 7.9% (95% CI 5.0–10.9) after robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. from https://www.auajournals.org/doi/10.1097/JU.0000000000000313

3Post-robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) inguinal hernias, though less common than in open prostatectomy, still occur with a reported incidence of 4% to 20%. These hernias are often indirect, developing within 2-3 years post-surgery. While RARP generally has fewer complications, the placement of port sites and specimen extraction can contribute to hernia formation

more than I expected

I had robotic prostatectomy in 2006 . Since then I’ve had 4 hernias 😳

My Robotic was 2016 and in 2017 (11 months) I had my left side hernia repaired. I was told both sides had mesh installed as a precaution. No hernias prior and none since. I was not careful about lifting. I had 35 radiation treatments 6 weeks after my Robotic.

I had an open RP. About a year later I had an ultrasound in my right groin area - to investigate unexplained swelling that turned out to be an inguinal hernia. It's small and deep (according to the hernia surgeon) and isn't bothering me, so he's not going to do anything until it does. Apparently, I'll get early warning signals (i.e. pain) when it becomes an issue. I am pretty sure it wasn't there before my surgery.

Hey tjm, what’s the “plug” part of that surgery? Curious since I may need to repair an umbilical incisional hernia. Thanks!

Phil, The plug is made out of same material as the mesh patch. Since it was an open repair he puts in the plug which has a flange that he stitches into the muscle, then he puts the mesh over that and stitches it secure. Says he does all his opens that way.

Had RP in 2019. Surgeon said I had a small inguinal hernia that will need to be fixed soon. Had mesh hernia surgery following year . The hernia surgeon got the mesh into the nerve bundle in groin and I’m in pain all the time where incision is. Had hernia surgery on opposite side 20 years ago and it was sewed up and no problems with it. I have a friend who went in for RP and they found an hernia and they fixed his hernia after RP . 2 surgeries at 1 time.
