Anyone have experiences with Dr. Quevedo at Mayo: Align with Kwon?

Posted by jbnewby1313 @jbnewby1313, Feb 17 3:06pm

I have done a lot of research and I really like Dr. Kwon and Dr. Heath, their philosophies and course of treatments. I have scheduled my first appointment for March. Does anyone have experience with any of these doctors that you could share? Is there a way to see different doctors' philosophies other than reading their publications? I realize each patient care is individualized. I am particularly interested in triple therapy.

Was your Arpn Christine? Kwons team is exceptional. Personally the reading of the pet scan was 3x more thorough than the K U team I had. They picked up a left maxillary sinus enlargement which I feared to be metastasizing pc. Turned out to be sensitive to antibiotics and was cured by a root canal. They read my outside previous scans and one by one pronounced each prior concern to be resolved. They found and commented on each of my old cowboy fractures. I thought his team was the best I have yet encountered. You have to figure him to be largely administrative with 8k patients or more. I will continue using them for scans.

I agree that the "Kwon team" is exceptional, especially Christine and Amy. Or maybe I should say the females on the team are exceptional in our experience. There is one male RN who is not, either in person or when he answers messages posted on the portal. Luckily, he doesn't answer nearly as often as the other members of the team.

Are you also getting a PSMA Pet scan? That is better at finding metastasis on your body than an MRI. The MRI can be really useful for Finding metastasis inside the prostate

I already had a PSMA Pet. The cancer appeared to be only in my prostate this time.

Does anyone have experience with Dr. Fernando Quevedo? What thoughts do you have? Do his philosophies seem more palliative and traditional or progressive and align with the triple treatment philosophy? Were you happy with your care and treatments?

I was recently diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. Gleason 9 with imaging showing metastasis to pelvic lymph nodes. Trying to learn as much as I can and presently weighing surgery vs radiation. I found Dr. Quevedo “dismissive.” He wasn’t interested in answering my questions and told me consulting with “too many experts” would only confuse me. I traveled from out of state to meet with him and was very disappointed. He made it clear he’s within a year of retiring and “checked out.” Get a second opinion!

You should try to get Dr. Heath to handle your case. She is one of the best oncologist in the country and Mayo Rochester has her in residence.

The doctor essentially told you I’m not interested in anything anymore. That’s a real shame, Especially when they have such a great doctor at the same facility.

Thank you for your detailed response. Yes, I have done quite a lot of research and feel very strongly about the information and research coming out of the Prostrate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) and the Mayo Clinic. Without sharing too much, my PSA has gone up .1 every month. My current doctor wants to wait until it gets to 10 (!!) before doing anything, so yes, I am seeking a second opinion. I am grateful to hear that Dr. Quevedo was matched to me based on my initial needs. As a coach and athlete I appreciate the team reference.

Hi jbnewby1313 - I am not sure of your situation - if you want to share your details in your profile, it can help those of us here to help answer your treatment and test questions. My husband sees Dr. Kwon and Dr. Heath now - we live 8 hrs away, so have a local GU Oncologist who oversees the medical systemic treatments. Dr. Kwon recommended a stronger chemo and treatment plan than our local Onc was comfortable with, so we ended up adjusting it a bit. Once we had Dr Heath on board, our local Onc was much more comfortable with the recommendations. We never saw Dr Quevedo, although he was assigned for our first visit. We had to have an unexpected procedure that required us to stay another 4 days, so we put off seeing an oncology at that visit knowing we would be treated ultimately by our local Onc. We have a close friend who sees him (Quevado) and has had good experiences. As other have said, you get a team at Mayo, and they all see your data immediately. It’s fantastic to get care there. We are from Michigan and had heard of Dr Heath’s excellent work here and hoped to see her as my hubs case is a bit rare. We were fortunate to get in with her at Mayo on our 2nd visit and will see her in 2 weeks. My hub finished chemo 3 weeks ago so we will see what the impact has been. We will see Dr Kwon’s team again too. Good luck to you!
