Skin problem and blow outs on bag edge

Posted by lrandall51 @lrandall51, Mar 6 11:48am

I am almost 6 months out of surgery. I have a rash around the stomach area where bag adheres to skin. Any suggestions?
Also. My stool seems to collect at the stoma and eventually pushes thru the seal of the bag. Any suggestions? I started using the lubricant and it seems to help. Trying to firm up stool as well. Thank you

Hi, Katey. I take baths with my bag on. It feels super good to soak in a tub. That said, my immune system is weak from medications that I take for rheumatoid arthritis. If you are on meds that reduce your white blood cell counts (i.e. steroids, chemo, biologics for IBD), maybe ask your doc if it is safe for you to soak in a tub without your bag on. I used to shower with my bag off when it was "innactive." Well, I had a small sore on my backside that became infected with a morganella infection. Basically, my wound care doc told me that if I have any cuts, abrasions, bug bites, i.e., I should not bathe with my bag off. However--I do like changing my bag in my shower, and washing the bag area with the hand-held shower sprayer. I get better adherance by completely washing off bag remover residue. Your wound/ ostomy care nurse can recommend what type of soap you should use. Avoid soap with moisturizers that would reduce adherance, for example.

Thank you! I will try bathing with a Stona cap. Oh, the idea of a good soal is wonderful!

@lrandall51 Sounds like you are experiencing 'pancaking' near your stoma sight.
Do you gave an ileostomy? I had that same problem in the beginning of my stoma journey. I found applying oil, olive or mineral, around the inside of my pouch helped.
Also if you want to thicken your output peanut butter, mashed potatoes and marshmallows all work.
I only change my pouch every 5 to 6 days unless I form a leak which isn't very often, thankfully.
It takes time, I'm 2 years in and have learned several tricks.

How long did it take you to change your pouch by yourself? My husband's operation was August 2024 and I'm still changing it every 4 days. Not a problem as it only takes 15 minutes. Heaven only knows how long it would take him. He has cancer issues so I'll never add to his existing problems.

I had same problems with stool gathering under pouch that def bothers stomach and skin. Oil in my bag helps. I also got 2 new things to try. A caulk that is added on top of the ring…and a sponge applicator with sticky stuff that goes around the outer edge that makes adhering bag better.

Thank you for your help. I am trying to firm up my stool with the same OTC meds. How long does it take to heal from surgery? I am 6 weeks out and it still looks raw. My skin is suffering the most….still looking for an osteomyelitis nurse here.

Are you talking about the surgery incision? I had 4 Laproscopic holes and a 4 inch incision. The incision was glued together and all this was completely healed within about two weeks after leaving the Hospital.
If you are talking about the redness on your skin around your Stoma and are still having problems you need to see a Doctor. Look for a Wound Center at a hospital near you. See a Gastroenterologist or go to the ER but see someone ASAP.

Thank you for your input. He hasn't indicated a desire to try it. However, I'll continue to do it as long as I'm able. 15 to 20 minutes for the pouch change and just a few minutes for the other stoma , mucas fistula on his left side which only requires gauze and tape. Good luck in this continuing journey.
