Hi @kinmeta, and welcome to Connect. It can be very frightening to not know what's going on with your body and your health!

If you'd like to get an opinion from experts at the Mayo Clinic, please call any of our 3 campuses: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
They will answer your questions, and help you on your healthcare journey.

In the meantime, I'd like to introduce you to fellow Connect members who may be able to share their experiences with you about intestinal metaplasia. Please meet @nancyj1221, @travelgirl, @jafd, @dandl148, @phyllisbator, and @saucy, who have experience with intestinal metaplasia, Barrett's esophagus.
I would also encourage you to watch this Mayo Clinic video about Barretts Esophagus, Intestinal Metaplasia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTbeFAOVN8Q

We look forward to getting to know you @kinmeta. What explanations have the doctors given you thus far?

@kinmeta Welcome to mayo connect. I highly recommend you go to Mayo Clinic and get another opinion from them. Barrett's Esophagus can be treated. My Uncle has had it for many years. I myself have Gerd (acid Reflex on Steroids, as I call it LOL. and the precursor to Barrett's Syndrome). If I do not take 40mm Omeprazole twice a day. I feel like I have Dangers going through my chest. Mayo Clinic helped me find the correct medicine and dosage to stop that horrible pain and put my Gerd in check. I had been to other doctors as well, who were not listening to me or didn't know how to handle someone with as severe issues, as I was getting from the Gerd. It took several months to get the gerd symptoms in check. And I won't lie I swore I was dying. I was in that much pain. After taking the medicine prescribed by Mayo Clinic I have been able to go back and drink my coffee again. I couldn't even drink a cup of coffee or tea without being sick. I love Mayo Clinic it is one of the TOP medical facilities in the world. Once you experience them you will never want to go to another medical facility again. I wish you the best.

I would like to share my experience about GERD and Crohn's desease. I had GERD since I was 14 years old. I am going to be 72 in one month. I suffered most of my life with the effects of acid stomach and reflux. Last year by accident I discovered the source of the problem. I was treated when I was 15 years old by an Italian Doctor who showed me a clean liver stops most health problems. I learned it in1960 that the liver controlled the acid stomach and reflux=GERD. Last year I had a neck pain and noticed that bread and sweet deserts was increasing the inflammation pain and vegetables with protein without sugars and carbohydrates was decreasing the pain. While I was trying to manage my neck pain I suddenly realized my GERD stopped. Wow why didn't any one tell me that vegetables is liver food and once we cut bread and sugar with all carbohydrates the liver is happy and stops GERD. How simple is that. The liver actually loves raw vegetables since I tested and responds within ½ hour. When I changed my diet last year the following happened: I reversed diabetes, I stopped GERD completely, I no longer have ulcers on my esophagus, Crohn's went into remission, my high blood pressure became normal, all my joint pain, lower back pain, and hands pain stopped. My memory started to work like never before in my entire life. But I did have a liver supplement that I've been taking that helped but the change of diet was the best results. Now I take the Liver Support Factors pills only when I eat foods that I shouldn't eat. My doctor after many blood tests and Cat Scan told me “you figured out the health problems and there is no medication for you”. Next appointment 4 months from my last visit. I knew the liver is the center to control disease but I couldn't convince the Gastro Doctor in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota about 4.5 years ago who prescribed Pentasa. I hope we start a path of investigation of how the liver works. Create new testing to analyze the condition of the liver. How much fat is allowed, how many free radicals are allowed and how we can remove the excess, how much toxins are we allowed to have, and other items that congested the liver. I think if we can understand the liver we will discover the source of many desease that plagues us. I look forward to hear from you. Please pass the information to the right person. Thank you very much.

I wrote about this quite a while ago. I had the LYNX for acid reflux in 2014 but still needed medication, also had high A1C and feet cramps and many other ailments. I had cut out carbs in the 90's but still ate fruit and high fiber protein bars. After reading about carbohydrate malabsrobation I cut all carbs including fruit and it was a miracle. No doctor ever told me any of this just prescribed meds and finally surgery. The bloating, gas, reflux, water weight all gone! A1C finally normal after 40 years! It's all about diet

I agree with you since I discovered diet is the key to success with health. I know it is the liver where these problems generate. Cleaning the liver removes all these problems as I experienced in 1960. Now I tested my knowledge of 1960 and it worked very well. Good luck to you and best wishes with your health.

Welcome to Mayo Connect, @healthsearch!
Thank you very much for sharing your experience and insightful comments.
I agree that we are what we eat.
Have you found anything effective in addition to your dietary change?

For me the secret is the liver. Methionine or Alpha Lipoic Acid removes the free radicals. Russia according one doctor is using a lot of Alpha Lipoic Acid and yes it does help Neuropathy. But eating bread and carbohydrates was putting me back to square one. He told me I had to do South Beach diet. I never looked into that diet. I am paying attention to my feet and neck to what I can eat since I am getting pain. I have to find a doctor who really understands the liver. But I do know very well that the liver controls GERD and inflammation. I confirmed it many times by paying attention to my body. I am almost concluding that cancer is coming from the liver also since free radicals are known to cause cancer. Also they are treating cancer with diet. I think the liver was designed for the jungle and not restaurants and processed foods. The word diet=liver. I hope soon they start understanding the liver better than me.

What is it that mayo clinic put you on

Hello @ikie, and welcome to Connect,

Did you want to know more about Pentasa, (Mesalamine)?
This medication is used to treat ulcerative colitis, and reduce symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain. Mesalamine belongs to a class of drugs known as aminosalicylates. It works by decreasing swelling in the colon. You can read more details here: http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/mesalamine-oral-route/description/drg-20064708
