Osteopenia and ce4vical steroid epidural
Have any of you had steroid infections in cervical sp8ne with osteopenia. I'm not on any meds for osteopenia, just diet increase of calcium. Dexa came back after 2 years of diet and exercise with slight improvement or the same. Neck is at -2.2. I have bone spurs that are causing some issues in neck and 1 injection 3 months ago helped but now the pain is creeping back. I'm not sure if I should do more injections and my internist says it up to me!!! Any insight will be appreciated!

I would. I'm assuming these are facet injection and not epidural because you mention the bone spurs. Three months is about right though you may not need them as soon the next time.
Sometimes they will do three of these injections before offering you radiofrequency of the medial branch nerve--the nerve that carried pain signals. https://novusspinecenter.com/pain-treatments/cervical-medial-branch-radiofrequency-ablation I haven't had the injections but I'm headed that way with having the bone spurs.
My fingers were not cooperating with me when I wrote this! I'm having injections not infections!!! I'm wondering if steroid injections increase the speed of osteoporosis happening.
denway91,
When the adverse reactions from Tymlos became unbearable, my rheumatologist, thinking the pain was from "osteoarthritis or previous compression fractures" referred me to a pain specialist. My "pain guy" did several steroid-type injections in my back (including a guided deep muscle injection) over a few month period which did lessen my pain a bit. During the last appointment with the doc I told him I was having severe shoulder and chest pain and could not breathe deeply enough to expand my lungs. He recommended I run, not walk, to the nearest doc or ER, which I did. As expected, the ER doc requested an x-ray and CT scan of my chest and spine. I was diagnosed with a T12 burst fracture and told I should get the soonest available appointment with a spine specialist.
I met with the spine doctor who said that I did indeed have a fracture of T12, which was already mostly healed and there was nothing more he could do about it. He questioned why the ER doc would let me out of the hospital if she believed I had a burst T12. Hmmm, I dunno!
Now the real reason for this post: My spine doctor told me that the injections, while relatively safe and perhaps helpful, should not become "habit". He said these injections can cause weight gain that is difficult to shed, diabetes, and worsening of osteoporosis. He went on to say that the body can build tolerance to these meds and more might need to be injected in the future to get relief.
I was lucky, after convincing my rheumatologist that the cause of all of my health issues were related to Tymlos, I discontinued it. Within days of discontinuation, my pains had subsided and I felt somewhat normal again. I took Tymlos for 9-1/2 months but sadly it took me another 9-1/2 months before I felt like my old self again.
Happy Spring, y'all! Cheers!
