You are so right about the improvements in treatments. These would not be possible without the brilliant minds of research teams and doctors and our brave patients. 9 years ago when I was diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer and a 3cm amor in my upper left lung lobe, it was difficult to find the proper diagnosis and proper treatment. Without Mayo Clinic I would not be here today breathing, running and climbing higher to help others become aware of the amazing treatments that give us the best quality of life. So, Never Ever Give Up! is my motto. Keeping our attitude on the up side is equally important. So, love, laugh and sing and take time out to quiet your body mind and spirit 2x's a day. I am grateful for Mayo Connect it will help us all as we come together is this wonderful community. Thank you. Linda Wortman

Gerry, we look forward to getting to know more about you. What treatment have you had? How are you doing today?
I have stage IV lung cancer, non-small cell. I have been so fortunate because I qualified for first line treatment with Tarceva (Erlotinib). It's pill that I take once a day. At first, the side effects were pretty severe, but as time goes on, I am tolerating the drug very well, feeling great 90% of the time. And thanks to Mayo and their fantastic staff, I am feeling peace and calm in spite of having this damn disease.

Linda, did you ever take Tarceva (Erlotinib)?
Gerry, have you heard about or taken part the walk, run, climb races that Linda organizes for lung cancer awareness?

Hi Gerry & Colleen:
I am a 9 year nonsmall cell lung cancer survivor. My treatment was VATs resection of 3cm tumor and most of my left lung. I never smoked and when I ran to the library I found information about never smokers and lung cancer was very limited.
I soon learned the stigma we all may suffer with the diagnosis of this disease also affects the desperately needed lung cancer research funding and survivor support outside a hospital setting.
I am Very happy see that Lung cancer research and treatment has come such a long way. However more research is needed! After my life insurance company cancelled my policy, and told me I should be dead (based in survival statics) I completed running a 5k race in all 50 states !
Then my husband and I co founded a non profit foundation &
RunningLungs walk & run races just 2 years ago to create awareness & funding for Mayo lung cancer, lungbheslth & pulmonary research!
It is amazing how many people show gratefulness for our organization & outreach. Our events may be small but the community support message is welcome in RST, MPLS, PHX, BzN & soon JAX !
My Mayo Teams offered me much support and hope & the resesrch studies were a huge part of my
Survival along with my loving husband and family.
Most importantly was my attitude and will to Survive against the 85% odds of dying!
It took
Three years but I got back on my Xcountry skies, bicycle and then decided to start running races. This past August 2016, with the Mayo Clinic Humsn Physiology Research Team, we summitef Africas Mt Kilimanjaro.
My life's purpose is to give others hope so together we can fight back against lung disease, live the best quality of life possible, and help researchers blow lung cancer away!

I was diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer 3 years and 3 months ago. When I hear from people like you, I am lifted right out of any temporary depression and realize that I should always expect the best, rather than the worst. Getting a second opinion and treatment at Mayo was the best decision that I've made. I wish you the best.
