Anybody here have chronic constipation & pelvic floor dysfunction?
Hi,
I have slow transit constipation and have been going to pelvic floor PT and have been treated with various medication and laxatives but I feel like I am dealing with so much diarrhea it’s interfering with my daily living. I was wondering if anyone has had any success living with these issues? Thank you

Hi,
I can recommend a home remedy for constipation that my mom always gave me. I'm 78 and still use it. It's natural and works well. However, it only works when you take it. It's not like taking laxatives or medications everyday. It's a teaspoon or more if needed, of baking soda (the kind you cook with – Arm and Hammer) dissolved in a glass of water. Drink the whole glass. You may want to squeeze a little lemon juice in it to make it taste better. It tastes awful, but it works. Stay near the bathroom. It works fairly fast and will get rid of your constipation. Once it works it is done. It won't work again until you take it. That way, you may be able to not have diarrhea continually. It also helps get rid of gas and bloating. After it works, try and drink a lot of water to keep from being dehydrated.
I hope this helps!

Thank you very much! I will give this a try!!
Good! I hope it works for you. Just remember, it tastes awful so try and squeeze some lemon juice in it if you can. But it does work and it's natural. I've been using this since I was 12 years old and I'm 78.
I wish you the best!

Thank you!!
I have both and I've found kegel exercises, relaxing my pelvic floor by putting a hot pad on your lower stomach while lying down for 30 min every day. Also doing any exercises to build up your core strength. Breathing exercises, and biofeedback in your therapy should help you adjust your muscles to making the correct movements. Have you tried biofeedback?
Hi.. thank you for your response.,I haven’t tried the heat. I have had 15?sessions of pelvic floor therapy with biofeedback and I do the exercises at home. It has helped a lot with incontinence but I am still having trouble fully emptying my bowels so I get very backed up and then lots of diarrhea. I am going to try the warm compress. Thank you
Be careful because baking soda is very high in sodium. I understand you’re not taking every day. I have high blood pressure so I have to watch my sodium intake closely. I believe one teaspoon has over 1000 milligrams of sodium. Just thought I’d give you a heads up.
Thank you. I hadn’t thought of that. Any other suggestions are welcome!!!
The most recent drug for constipation is IBSRela. I have severe motility so absolutely nothing works for me but when a new drug hits the market my Gastro reaches out.
My regimen is pretty severe and my doctor in Atlanta wants me to go to Mayo.
The problem is everyone on here says you can’t get an appointment for years. I want to see if they can figure me out before I decide on a total colectomy. I’ve been dealing with this for 5 years and I’ve been very lucky but my regimen won’t last forever as it’s extensive now to be able to go twice a week.
You should be able to get an appointment with a proper referral. Have you called Mayo? They can give you guidelines for getting in sooner.
