diagnosed with Mobile cecum and redundant colon

Posted by marilyns22 @marilyns22, 3 days ago

For several years now I have been experiencing severe pain in my lower right abdomen that only lasts a minute or too and then goes away. Pain is excruciating!! Also chronic diarrhea. Dr. actually told me my CT showing the mobile cecum was "normal" and nothing to worry about. Now Barium enema x-ray shows my intestines are severally stretched and out of place. My Dr. says that is from chronic constipation and to take laxatives. I havent had a hard stool in years.
And I know that severe pain is my intestines twisting. But my Dr. is acting like this is nothing to worry about. First visit he prescribed me Colestipol. Said my diarrhea was because I had my gallbladder removed. Now he is saying take laxatives even though I am still having diarrhea everyday after a normal stool first. So confused and frustrated.

Hi, @marilyns22 - I'm sorry to hear about the excruciating pain and the chronic diarrhea. Sounds like you're trying to sort out and make sense of the things the doctor has told you.

Have you considered getting a second opinion? How are you feeling this evening?

Hi Lisa and thank you so much for asking. I saw my gastroenterologist again today. His recommendation was going to be laxatives until I started questioning him about how was that going to fix my “redundant sigmoid and cecum. According to him, a “mobile cecum” is the term Europeans use for Redundant colon. Not what I read, but what do I know? My history is two anterior/posterior spinal fusion, incisional hernia, gallbladder surgery, 2 adhesion surgeries plus over 10 other surgeries outside of my abdomen. So now he has ordered a colonoscopy for next Tuesday. This morning, first trip to bathroom was a decent, normal soft BM. Second one was lumpy water and third was just water. I got nauseous twice today for a few minutes which is new to me. Now my stomach is bloated and has been “uncomfortable “ all day. As far as a second opinion, I talked to my insurance companies nurse advocate last week about this. She told me that she could contact the Cleveland Clinic and get an opinion from them. They were supposed to contact me but no one has. Nurse didn’t call back like she said she was either.

Hello, just a thought...If your intestines are stretched this may be secondary to the constipation/sluggish bowel due to the redundant colon, and if you say you having diarrhoea you may actually be experiencing overflow where the liquidy stool is just bypassing the constipation.
My 3 year old daughter also experiences this right sided pain on a daily basis from a redundant sigmoid colon and we are awaiting a gastroenterologist opinion.

My first posting. I've been diagnosed with Mobile Cecum Syndrome & advised to have an ileocecectomy. I suffer excruciating pain intermittently, specifically in ONE SINGLE spot. I've already canceled surgery once. I just don't see how removing the wandering cecum, ileocecal joint, clipping the end of the ileum and few centimeters of the ascending colon and sewing the two ends together is going to stop the pain in that ONE SINGLE spot. The spot of pain does not wander, it is not mobile. How does removing the "mobile" cecum stop the excruciating pain?

So sorry for your daughter! And you are right about the diarrhea. Weird part is, I never pass anything hard. Guessing it just stays in there until it turns to liquid. When I go, it’s a whole lot of water! Hope someone helps your daughter.

Hi drgayle. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I too just found out that I have a mobile cecum and get excruciating pain in my lower right abdomen and under my left rib age . Dr calling it a redundant sigmoid and cecum. So I really don’t know anything about it. I really think adhesions have constricted my intestines in two places so not allowing formed stool, even soft,to pass through.
Worse part for me is my doctor isn’t considering this serious, says my pain is a spasm and to take laxatives. Believe me, and sounds like you know. That pain is a lot more than a spasm and to!!

You may wish to discuss with your MD the issue of overflow constipation ( a/k/a paradoxical diarrhea ). Paradoxical diarrhea (overflow diarrhea) occurs when watery stools gush around more solid stool.

I do think that is what is happening with all the diarrhea. Dr. hasnt mentioned anything about that though. And sure his treatment would be more laxatives! Sad part is this seemed to be happening every time I eat anything now. Have taken Miralax the last two day plus 3 glycerine suppositories. Results were very limited amount of very soft stool and of course water. Miserable pain in left side all day yesterday. Better today after going that little bit but doesnt seem to be any where near enough.
