I had a urine cytology done last week and the report came back negative for high grade urothelial carcinoma. I read that a negative report does not confirm the absence of cancer. So I'm in a strange limbo. My friends are trying to be supportive but to their ears this report means I don't have cancer and that I need to shut up and quit worrying about it. I'm 74.5 years old and a former smoker and so considered a high risk for cancer. I'm scheduled for a cystoscopy in 3 weeks and hope that there will be concrete evidence either way. Has anyone received a negative cytology report but then received a cancer diagnosis? The quest is to discover the reason for the microscopic blood hematuria in the urine. Grateful for this group.

My situation was different but I think you're very wise to follow up further. Hopefully everything will be fine and it will ease your worry. You are listening to your instincts and that's important especially when it comes to your health. I wish you all the best.

I received a negative urine cytology report and then had a cystoscope which revealed high grade urothelial cancer. It’s best to have it checked out. I’m praying they will not find any cancer when you have the scope.
