How many biopsies?

Posted by dwyermw @dwyermw, Mar 6 5:42am

I am going in for my second biopsy - 30 months ago my Gleason score was 3+3.. My PSA has been climbing so a second biopsy is recommended. Just wondering if having multiple biopsies is normal.

Thanks everybody for words of encouragement and for sharing their thoughts and prospective. As "type A personality" I know that IF I was a doctor my patient would have more active surveillance. It might not have changed a thing in the end, even with all precaution things can go wrong but I would have been sure I did recommended protocol for my patient. It is one thing to be offered an option of having biopsy every 2-3 years and refuse it for personal reasons and NOT being offered biopsy and missing, in this case , 3+4 score with no ductal involvement which would put my husband in more favorable position. I posted our case in this thread trying to help and advise person who started this thread or any other new patient who wondered what is correct protocol for active surveillance. I did not invent that protocol, I discovered it on UCSF, UCLA, end other sites. Also, just because some of us are close to great medical centers and have options for "cutting edge" treatments does not mean that most people are, most are not and many people can not afford them. For them early detection and early treatment is extremely important. I expect from myself only the best - whatever I do I give 100% of myself and laxness is something that I do not understand in any profession, let alone medical. I also do not measure anybody's pain or distress by comparing to other people's pain and misfortune - how can anybody quantify somebody's suffering ? I offer same help and attention to my friend who complains about painful acne as I do to my sister with heart failure. I do not tell my friend , oh well, get a grip woman XP , lol. Anyhow, sending all you my best wishes and healing vibes and thanks all for taking time to write. < 3

@dwyermw This is not unusual . in fact it is common practice . My 1st Biopsy was negative which was in conflict with my MRI RADS 5 Score , which indicated a 90 % plus chance of finding cancer . My 2nd Biopsy , six months later , came back with 6 Cores out of 16 Gleason 3 + 3 = 6. As is highly recommended . I had a 2nd and 3rd opinion of my Biopsy pathology results which finally determined I had 4 Cores G6 and 2 Cores Gleason 3 + 4 = 7
Refer to Dr. Patrick Walsh's book " Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer " .
It is necessary to wait several months before a 2nd Biopsy to allow the prostate to get back to normal , for example get past thhe swelling etc. I assume with Gleason 3 + 3 = 6 you were on Active Surveillance . Therefore the standard procedure is : Regular PSA ( LIKELY EVERY 3 MONTHS ) DRE Exam , Early on , A Bone & CT Scan . An MRI at 12 to 18 months and depending on the MRI results , possibly ( not always ) a 2nd confirmatory Biopsy . depending if the see any changes in tumor size or metastasis concerns .
NOTE : Always get a 2nd or 3rd opinion of your Biopsy results to confirm your Gleason Score . Many treatments aredetermined from this score .
Good Luck.
P.S. Go for a Transperineal MRI Fusion Biopsy .. NOT a Transrectal . One less chance of infection and furthermore with a Transperineal you can get to areas of the prostate the Transrectal cannot or is very difficult .

OK, well then that must be some sort of server error or something - especially if it’s happening regularly with timed intervals.
I mean, I like your posts and all…but not THAT much😜!

@heavyphil I suppose you wouldn't have clicked Like, Helpful, Hug within a couple minutes, and even so, these won't count as 3 posts. If it's one reply being posted 3x, yes it can be server error.
