Has anyone dealt successfully with Cervical stenosis without surgery?

Posted by billandri @billandri, Feb 3, 2019

I am a healthy and active 32 year old male. Last month I was diagnosed with cervical stenosis (C5-C6) after having morning finger numbness for 2 months. All 3 doctors I asked suggest surgery, either disk replacement or merging of spines. Has anyone dealt successfully with such conditions via non surgical means? Thank you.

I have severe c3 to c6 cervical stenosis. I've been to 7 top surgeons from NYC to Florida to syracuse ny. 4 wanted to do 4 level ACDF'S very bad 1 wanted to do 7 level Laminectomy very bad . 1 more wanted to do a hybrid with 7 posterior spacers and 2 level ACDF'S all the above terrible choice all fusion operations that will need a revision down the road guaranteed. 1 surgeon said I needed a 4 level laminoplasty that's where they cut one side of your lamina put in a spacer and metal plate. This is non fusion motion preserving but open neck surgery . Not wanting any open surgery or metal hardware in my neck I finally found Dr Shen Shen-spine in Latham ny and in staten island and new jersey too who is a world class endoscopic spine surgeon. There are only a handful of excellent endoscopic spine surgeon's because of the years of extra training it takes. Dr's fly in for his expertise in Endoscopic spine surgery. Check him out on his website or healthgrades or you tube. Do your own homework. You won't find anyone better. He's doing a. Endoscopic 4 level laminotomy and disectomy if needed all threw a small hole threw my lamina at each level. He said it will be outpatient and no neck braces less pain because it's not open surgery and quicker recovery he said golf in 3 weeks after because of it being endoscopicly. My stress n anxiety level is almost 0 know I'm not being fused or having metal plates in my neck. My surgery is 3/24/25. Don't get fused you don't have to check out Dr Shen or maybe you can a excellent endoscopic spine doctor near you. There's not that many as good as Shen. No fusion

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. Does he also treat cervical myelopathy? At Mayo theyre recommending surgery to remove part of the disk and then fusion rods and pins for me, not excited about it but they said if I fell just right I could be paralyzed for life, But this will limit my mobility.

I have degenerative cervical myelopathy, DCM. I have been told that it is a "spinal cord injury in slow motion" and (if I live long enough, or am injured in the right way) that it will eventually cause me to become a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down. I have no idea if surgery would be able to fix this degenerative cervical myelopathy. The problem is that I have so many comorbidities that I'm not considered to be a viable candidate for surgery. I have 5 serious birth defects, at least 15 autoimmune diseases/disorders, the majority of them are considered rare, and so many complications from the autoimmune diseases, Parkinson's, MS, Polymyositis, too many to write down, as well as Lewy Body Dementia, which does not allow me to have any general anesthesia at all. I've had 2 procedures without any anesthesia but I can tell you that the pain of being cut open without anesthesia is the worst pain in the world. The only way I got through it was knowing that it would end once they sewed me up. And the longest time was 45 minutes. But there's no way I could have spinal surgery or brain surgery (which I do need for the numerous arachnoid cysts I have, & also to fix the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leak I have inside my cranium, there's a hole somewhere in the dura mater) without anesthesia. But general anesthesia for someone with Lewy is likely to outright kill them, put them in a persistent vegetative state, or they die a few weeks or months later. Why go through all the pain of surgery (not to mention the expense), just to die anyway or to become a cabbage? I'm already in a wheelchair from the MS, the Polymyositis, Dermatomyositis, and god knows what else. I live with no hope for a better day because every day is worse. I've been sick most of my life. During the small periods when I felt normal, I was a long distance hiker on the Appalachian Trail, alone, no cell phones in those days, saw bears, deer, wonderful warblers & other birds, went on birdwatching trips to other countries, drove back & forth all over NAFTA (USA, Mexico, Canada), so at least I got to do some fun things long ago. Now I'm in a recliner all day, socially isolated, can't get out and about because I'm in too much pain, plus no ramps anywhere for my wheelchair. I listen to audio books, a few hobbies I can do from my recliner, on oxygen.

I'm having c3 to c6 cervical endoscopic laminotomy and disectomy which is trimming small pieces of bulging discs touch my spinal cord. He also offers disc regeneration but only if he thinks you need it. Dr Shen Latham ny n staten island new is a world class endoscopic spine surgeon check out his website n healthgrades n you tube. Do not settle for a fusion ACDF or Laminectomy PCDF bad. Look for yourself. 3/24 is my surgery. I spent 7 months 7 top notch surgeons they only know how to do open surgery. Endoscopic spine surgery takes years to be one of the best. That's why the rest of them do open surgery. Bad.

Have you researched
Going to a reputable clinic
Out of USA, and getting
Stemcell injections? It has
Helped many people who have had health issues.
For me the downside is the
Cost and planning a trip with all the details. Mostly the cost for me.

Surgery tomorrow c3 c6 cervical endoscopic laminotomy. No plates screws or fusion. Do not see traditional spine surgeons. They only cut you open and do ACDF'S or Laminectomy, these are fusion surgeries that will need revisions guaranteed down the road. Find a top rated endoscopic spine surgeon. Dr shen Latham ny also in new jersey and NYC. He's one of the best in northern hemisphere. Check out his website and healthgrades and you tube. If you don't have a top notch endoscopic spine surgeon near you Mail him your mri for a Zoom appointment. Good luck

Everything went well the hospital was awesome they gave diazpam even after I told them I took .05 mg a hr early also gave me a oxycoden and a Lyrica before surgery. Met the Dr shen before he decided he would do a extra level. So he did C3 to C7 .only drilling a hole on the right side of the lamina. Threw only 2 small incisions on the right side of my vertebrae. He did Laminomty first removing ligament flavum. The did the foraminotony which I'd cleaning up bone spurs on facet joint and did the discectomy to reduce bulging disc's. 2.5hrs on the table woke up pretty much painless. Took a couple oxycoden after surgery last night n one just a minute ago. Probably just need Tylenol after that. Feeling tired but pretty good. Thks
