Severe diarrhea during EBRT radiation? Advice, recommendations?

Posted by johnny8924 @johnny8924, Mar 13 8:15am

Anyone experience severe diarrhea during EBRT radiation? Two days after 11th session! Oncologist recommends taking Aleve because it's probably caused by inflammation. Dietitian recommends a low fiber diet, which I was following for a month or more already.

Also worth a try. I dabbled with them as well.

I recommend seeing an experienced nutritionist.

Radiation induced diarrhea is a whole different animal from the usual suspects.
In “normal” cases, a bout has a reason, which we can correct using fiber, probiotics, etc. But radiation produces an inflammation which is very hard to combat with products we are familiar with.
You really have to turn to the Immodium or Kaopectate to try to get it under control. Or if it’s still not responding, get an RX for Lomotil - it contains an opioid which basically stops the contractions of the gut. They also add a compound which makes it non addictive, but you should still follow dosage recommendations.

Thanks. Is there any sense of how long it takes for radiation induced diarrhea to resolve after treatment has stopped?

This is another one of those things with prostate cancer, where everyone is different. Most people have these symptoms go away within a few months some of them have it hang on for a year or more. There is no definitive answer to how long it will be.

Just keep immodium with you at all times, it works and works fast.

Mine went away quickly after I stopped radiation but now months later every now and again it comes back.
