On x-ray i have severe osteoarthritis, bone on bone, in my left hip. But I have no real pain, just discomfort in certain positions. I walk 30 min every day with no discomfort. I'm 78. The bad hip does not interfere with anything I want to do except that, due to the discomfort, I had to change my mattress and to sleep i can only get comfortable on one side. My hip discomfort has gotten worse since Sept. so I assume i will have real pain in another 6 month...or be unable to sleep without sleeping pills.. Plus my husband's dementia has gotten worse, and I think he will be unable to help me at all in another 6 month. Based on my assessment of the future, I'm having total hip replacement in April. I do not want to ruin the summer when we move to our beach house and, again, in 6 mo. I foresee real pain developing and my husband being unable with surgery recovery. Is this crazy to be having my hip replacement now when i have no real pain? When I had the other one replaced in 2017, I was disabled by the pain although it was not heavy pain despite the hip looking terrible on x-ray.

I’m a 74yo male who just had THR (anterior approach) 6 months after first injection for pain, and 3mo after 2nd injection. I started PT seven days after surgery, and today, 7 weeks after surgery I’ve resumed all normal activities and am barely aware of the hip,

I'm sorry for all you're going through Peggy and wish you and your husband the best.

Your question is best answered by your surgeon. I'm getting my right hip replaced in a few days. It started out as mild pain in my right groin and then just got slowly worse over the last year. I didn't think it was related to the hip, but sure enough, that's where the pain is felt.

All I can say - if I start to feel the same discomfort on my left side, and the xray shows I'm bone on bone, I'm getting it replaced. I'm 70 now and have had both knees replaced. I don't want to wait until the pain is so bad Im suffering every day, as I am now because I didn't seek help earlier.

Everyones's situation is different. My message is this - if your surgeon says the joint will eventually have to be replaced, go ahead and get it replaced as soon as possible and at a time as convenient to you as possible. You may not have that luxury considering what's going on with your husband. Recovery from THR is supposed to be relatively quick, but it would still be good to have someone with you for the first few weeks.

All the best to you Peggy.
