rickylucy63,
I find it intelligent to be afraid of Prolia.
Forteo and Tymlos are the two medications that help heal fractures. I consider them the best osteoporosis medications. One nice thing about them is that you can stop taking them abruptly, if you have negative reactions. They leave your body quickly within 24 hours and there is no rebound from either.
I'm starting a third year on Forteo. If you want more information, I'm happy to respond.
I am to start on Forteo soon. I too am afraid of side effects, but I tried Algaecal and my bone density worsened. I'm at -3.5T on lumbar spine and -2.5 for femoral neck. My other numbers are -2.2 to -2.5. I've exercised my whole life and eaten right. My endocrinologist believes it's from an eating disorder (anorexia) which began in high school and continued in college. After college, I got it together. However, I had maybe 6 menstrual cycles until the age of 22 due to my weight. With that being said, I think this is my only recourse. I had 2 terrible cycling accidents and broke ribs, clavicle, pelvis, tailbone, elbow, you name it. No more cycling. Just wondering how Forteo worked for you and does it skew blood work numbers.
smodesitt,
Forteo works well for me. -3.1 to -2.6 in the lumbar spine. I didn't have side effects.
It doesn't skew the blood work numbers.
It can reflect higher blood calcium. There is an actual rise for the first hours after the injection. So time any calcium testing by delaying the injection until later in the morning.
If calcium levels are high during use it might indicate a preexisting problem with the kidneys or parathyroid glands, which you'd want to resolve before continuing with the drug.
That is a lot of fractures; I hope you don't ache. And I'm glad you didn't suffer vertebral fractures above the tailbone.
You're going to be on the very best medication. Cheers to your endocrinologist and good cheer to your bones.
I can go on about Forteo extensively. I'd better wait for any questions you might have.
They can do a kyphoplasty where a bone cement is injected into the vertebra to repair the fracture, strengthen the vertebra and some people gain a little height.
schallsa, scary. How long have you been on Prolia, and when was your last injection. It is generally considered that Reclast is the best medicine to prevent rebound fractures after Prolia.
Reclast isn't always without complications. Prolia is sometime given with Forteo because it has better results than either drug alone. If your last Prolia were recent I would try to get Forteo added at least for the remaining months of Prolia duration. Forteo expedites the healing of fractures while relieving pain.
What symptoms are you having with the combined medications?
Prednisone and Prolia increase the risk of lung infections. You might call your physician, if you haven't.
Thank you, helpful! I don't want to risk lung infections with copd. I am afraid of prolia. I need something to boost bone health. I now take 1200 mgs. Of calcium & 2000 most of d-3
Alvin, you may have fractured further because Evenity didn't have enough time to work. I keep hearing about people fracturing while on Evenity. Because of this were I in your situation I would forfeit further injections of Evenity I ask the doctor (endocrinologist?) to prescribe either Forteo or Tymlos. If I hadn't already I would check testosterone levels. I would also want the bone marker P1NP and in one month.
I'm not happy with the way Prolia or Evenity works. But I would take either, if there weren't better medications available.

hi there @rickylucy63 ,
I also fractured my T-9 back in October. It was an acute fracture with a 50% height loss. They recommended kyphoplasty, but by the time it was approved by insurance, it was too late to do any good. You need to get it within 2 months, 3 at the latest, because by then the bone has already started to heal, and the height can't be restored.
I still am suffering from the fracture and cannot do the things I used to love to do- like gardening, cooking special meals, and painting. The last is the worst because I'm an artist.
I have been on Tymlos for 5 weeks now, and was hoping it was helping, but I got the bad news today that I have a fractured rib. Most probably from sneezing or coughing, because I haven't done anything strenuous. So evidently, the Tymlos hasn't protected the bones yet. I don't know. I hope you aren't suffering. Pain from compression fractures can be debilitating. I'd ask your doctor for an anabolic, as @gently said. She gives excellent advice.

I just found this out hadn’t dit the scan DEXA have no pain didn’t know I had it had an x-ray and an MRI and have not heard anything from the doctor so I’m checking with all of you on Mayo Clinic site to see different recommendations before I move forward, they recommended Prolia but horrible side effects so refused it.What is anabolic?
Calcitonin nasal spray can be prescribed for short term pain while fracture is new and healing. It helped me.
