Osteoporosis and lower back pain

Posted by kdickerson @kdickerson, Dec 23, 2024

Hi everyone and thank you for taking time to read my post. I am 58 and healthy- retired teacher and now teach 3 days Reading Intervention. Here is my issue- I have severe osteoporosis and, to be honest, I’m scared. My hips are mild to moderate but my spine is in the range 3.2 to 3.4. I love my doctor and trust him completely. His plan is to start Evenity then Prolia. Can someone share experience with pain? My lower back hurts off and on all day but worse in the mornings. Thank you all so much.

A simple idea--when was the last time you got a new mattress or mattress topper? If you get the right one, the morning stiffness might be reduced. Some don't give enough, and others might not give enough support. It's a trial and error, but we have found that the right mattress topper makes a difference. This is somewhat like when a running or walking shoe has broken down, one can sometimes feel the need for a new one.

Thanks for this info! I searched 'mattress topper' in the group and was surprised anything came up. This is something I've been contemplating myself but I'm unsure about the type and brand of mattress topper to get. There are so many out there! I have upper back discomfort/pain that I'm sure must be associated with the osteoporosis and also some knee pain at times. My husband also has degenerative disks and finds it difficult to stay in one position for any length of time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you so much to everyone in this forum group. You're all wonderful!

Try looking for a saatva mattress topper. Pricey but it has helped both of us.

Maybe google for your conditions and see what topper comes up as best. Then narrow it down, and read customer reviews. We ordered a Viscosoft Topper that was an improvement. I think our old one had ceased to be of value, so perhaps anything would have been an improvement! I agree that there are lots of choices,

Hi. I have severe osteoporosis and was advised to start Prolia injections because if ibs issues. I could only take 2 injections (1 year). I developed a bad skin reaction and infection. I wanted to stop treatment all together but 3 drs influenced Ed me to try another med. I only agreed to Alendronate which is the o e I was afraid if with Ibs. So far I have done 9 treatments. I dislike being on med cause my stomach gets upset and I have a dry mouth and general lousy feeling. My personal feeling g is of being sorry I started , yet I’m afraid to stop. I don’t want to discourage you but I’m just explaining my thoughts. I read the posts every day and worry. I go back to my rheumatologist next month and will need to decide my future . Good luck to you. I hope you read more favorable posts.

Hi, you literally have the exact same diagnosis I have minus I have severe scoliosis so the degeneration of my spine is what my osteoporosis is so severe. I take Tymlos now for bone density. I hope in May when they test my bone density that the Tymlos help me out.

Yes, I've tried the googling and have discovered there is quite a variety. I'll check out the Viscosoft, I believe I ran across it online. These toppers all seem to be vacuum packed. Did yours arrive that way and did you have any difficulty with it filling out properly?

Thanks again.
