I am currently in this treatment. I recommend starting stool softeners when receiving the chemo. My doctor had me get something to prevent diarrhea but that hasn't occurred, I do get constipated. At a recent patient education conference sponsored by LiveLung, a nurse practitioner suggested that we use a softener and, if need be, a laxative to push it through.

The chemo leaves me with an odd taste in my mouth. Lemon drops seem to balance that out.

Also, 5-6 small meals instead of 3 regular meals. Have healthy snack options on hand.

Edit to add: add a protein shake, bar, or powder to the mix. It helps rebuild blood levels. I had to postpone my second chemo because my white blood count was low.

very helpful. thank you. do you take the stool softener every day, regardless, or wait till you need it?
