In addition to surviving measles, I also had scarlet fever when I was 10 years old. So that would have been 80 years ago. There were no medications then. I remember being put into an ambulance and was taken to a special hospital that was for people with communicable diseases. I remained there in seclusion until the disease had run its course. Of course I could have easily died. My present doctor feels that surviving these life threatening diseases has made my immune system stronger and may be a contributing factor to why I am doing so well at such an advanced age.

Hi Marilyn,
That's too bad that you had scarlet fever and measles! And, so young too! My mom had scarlet fever also in 1946 right after I was born. We both almost died when I was being born. In fact, the doctor did think I was dead until the nurse told him, "The baby moved!" Then he started saving me and I screeched which woke my mother up from the drugs they had given her for pain. She yelled, "Shut that damn kid up!" not realizing it was me, of course. She left the hospital with scarlet fever and was very sick and in bed for a couple months. We lived with my grandparents at that time. My father was out fighting WWII. I got confused and thought my grandmother was my mother and that my mother was my sister. My mother fought very hard but she got well. I finally figured out that she really was my mother. We became very close all the rest of her life. She wasn't as lucky as you as far as her health was concerned. She died at age 70 of pulmonary emphysema and arteriosclerosis. I took care of her for 15 years. I'm so glad we had that time together. I still miss her.
I'm glad that you are doing so well!
