Does any neurologist prescribe Alpha Lipoic Acid?

R-ALA features very heavily on this forum as a potential remedy for peripheral neuropathy. Does any Neurologist actually prescribe it.

ALA has been used since the 1960s in Germany. The IV works better than the pills. I personally had an allergic reaction. My kidneys stopped working I swelled up huge. Told never to take it again. Not very much research about it in the US.

I recently had a podiatrist prescribe Alpha Lipoic Acid. He said 600 mg per day. Looking at options & reviews on Amazon, it seems many users feel it must be R-Alpha Lipoic Acid. Also suggested by them is to take 300 mg in the morning and 300 mg in the evening. Has anyone had any success with this? And, what specific brand are you using? And, where do you purchase it? Thank you.

It’s an over the counter medication. If you don’t find it ask the pharmacist to order it. I had an allergic reaction to it my kidneys stopped working looked like a stay puff marshmallow.
Germany has been using it by IV around the 1960’s they say the pill doesn’t work well. We are stationed in Germany.

My neurologist (in US at Dartmouth in NH) thought it was safe for me to try. She mentioned she was underwhelmed by feedback she’d gotten. As I’d been intrigued by some research I’d read, I decided to proceed. Actually noticed zero benefit after 3+ months. BTW, not a fan of Amazon supplements. Use Emerson Ecologics, which sells products with quality control.

My neurologist prescribed 600 mg per day but didn't mention the R version. I discovered that by doing research. This version helps stabilize ALA as it can be made less effective easily. Also discovered that you should take it 30 minutes before eating or 2 hours after or it will also interact with food and the effects will be lessened. I used it for 6 months then decided to go off it. After a month where my symptoms worsened I have gone back on it. Hopefully it will help again. I have used the R version from Vegan Labs

My neurologist recommended it so I take one before breakfast, and another in the evening on an empty stomach. So, 600mg twice a day. 1200 mg total.
It definitely helps me.
YOU SHOULD TAKE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
I’ve chosen to take the brand, “DOCTOR’S BEST” 600MG.
