I broke my leg after taking a fall while doing MTB, I was clipped in. In my case I don't think the clips were a factor, I was taking a curve over wooden slats and did not have enough speed, and I believe my foot came off the clip but as I was falling the pedal hit my leg and that's how it broke. As incredibly painful as all that was, it saved my life as it was how they found my 5.2 aneurysm.

Clips are tricky and especially if you are making frequent stops like traffic lights, if you are using your bike more for commute or city riding, cages may be better.
