Excruciating pain on weight bearing 10 years after TKR

Posted by cboden51 @cboden51, Feb 26 11:50am

My TKR was 10 years ago. Last November I started having a slight feeling of giving at either the top or bottom of the knee followed by excruciating pain on weight bearing that is relieved only by sitting down - sometimes just for a minute. I literally cannot walk on it for more than a couple of steps before feeling like I m going to faint. Has occurred 8 more times. At other times there is pain on either the medial or lateral side that eventually goes away. mRI does not show any problem with the joint. Ideas?

Infection? It sounds a bit like what I experienced, but my experience was just seven months after my TKR.

Is it swelling? What activity are you doing when this happens? Can it be duplicated? I had hip replacement X3 not knee but what you’re experiencing seems like it’s an ongoing problem especially if it’s occurring more frequently. Doctors tend to fixate on MRI results and do not see the whole picture

No swelling, cannot duplicate which makes it hard.

Thanks for your response. It does not seem like an infections no swelling, no tenderness, no redness and isn't getting worse

I didn’t have much in the way of symptoms until I developed a large pimple which ruptured and then my infection was diagnosed. Hopefully not, but our bodies tend to treat prosthetics like a foreign body that festers and wants to be rejected, as a physician friend explained to me.

MRI won’t show movement activated problems. Sounds like something comes and goes out of place. Best of luck!!!

There IS obviously something wrong even though the MRI does not show anything. It could possibly be pain radiating from the hip area. I had horrible pain in my left knee and all the way down my leg when the femoral head broke off and I needed a hip replacement. (I already had two knee replacements.)

Yes, hip pain can radiate to the knee. This is called referred pain and is common because the hip and knee are connected by muscles and tendons. [1, 2, 3]
Possible causes [1, 4]

• Hip arthritis: Inflammation of the hip joint can cause pain in the groin, hip, and knee. [1, 4]
• Sciatica: Pain that radiates from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down the leg. [5]
• Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons that connect muscles to bones. [6]
• IT band inflammation: Inflammation of the iliotibial band, a connective tissue that runs from the hip to the knee. [7]
• Pinched nerve: Pain that can radiate from the hip down the inner thigh and to the knee. [8]
• Soft tissue injuries: Sprains, strains, or overuse injuries can cause pain in the hip and knee. [9, 10]

Treatments Anti-inflammatory medications, Physical therapy, Corticosteroid injections, and Surgery. [11]
When to seek care [12]
Seek care if you have hip pain that radiates to the knee and you also experience: [12]

• Difficulty moving your leg or hip
• Inability to bear weight on the affected leg
• Deformity or a shortened leg
