Scar tissue after total knee revision
I had a failed TKR Dec, 2022 then a revision sept 2024 which failed. I have maybe 60 degrees, I can straighten it almost to zero. I have a very poor quality of life. My surgeon said there's nothing that can be done. I questioned if I had an allergy to nickle/metal and he said they put in top of the line equipment incase I was. I'm now questioning if I'm allergic to the cement. My right knee is twice the size of my left and is very disabiling. They are telling me I have to live with it and it's just my metabolic makeup. I disagree. Any suggestions or feedback would be extremely helpful.

Welcome any input
I am so sorry for all that you have gone through and are going through right now. I had a TKR in 2020 in a top Boston hospital with one of their “top surgeons”. Five years later, my replaced knee is just “not right”. It is stiff and painful. I told this to the surgeon and he just brushed me off saying “Well, it will never be the knee that God gave you”. That was his answer! My left knee is pretty bad but as of now, I will NOT get another knee replacement ever again. I will live with the pain, exercise to strengthen my upper leg and take over the counter pain relief (along with a knee brace or patch for pain). From the picture that you posted, I am thinking that you had an allergic reaction to either the nickel or the bone cement that they put in. I will say that before my surgery, I had to go for allergy testing for nickel and bone cement, along with other ingredients that could be in the replacement and the nickel allergy came out extremely high! I was fine with the bone cement. So, the surgeon ordered a replacement from a company called “Smith and Nephew” that was free of nickel. That swelling in your knee, to me, looks like an allergic reaction. If I were you, I would start with allergy testing specifically to nickel and that bone cement. If it comes out that you have one of those allergies, take that information and get a second opinion from a knee and hip surgeon. You should NOT have to live like that!!! All of my best wishes to you. MaryAnn from Boston
