Sudden onset of neuropathy

Posted by honghtt @honghtt, 2 days ago

Hello everyone,

48 yo, F. About 14 days ago, I suddenly had tingling and numbness on my two feet. Then it quickly moved up to my hands. At night, my feet are burning, and muscles twitching. The numbness and tingling are constant. I couldn't sleep at night! My PCP said that I'm having neuropathy, prescribed me with Amitriptyline and referred me to a specialist. First meeting will be next Tuesday.

I'm totally shocked since this came all of a sudden. I'm not drinking and very active. I had gestational diabetes but my A1C has always been around 5.4-4.6. I had Graves disease which turned into Hypothyroidism after treatment. I'm taking Levothyroxine for the last 20 years and my hormone has always been in the normal range.

I'm totally shocked as this came all of a sudden. Initial bloodwork looks fine. No deficiency in any nutrients. I'm reading all of the stories on Reddit and they gave crazy anxiety. However, given all of the symptoms, I'm 99 percent sure that I'm having neuropathy.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to ask for here. I'll do all of the tests to find out the cause (if any). But I'm so scared, frustrated and sad right now. How can I get back to my feet and move on?

Hong

Your PCP didn't suggest testing for Guillaume Barre Syndrome?

Hello. I am so sorry you are going through this. I am fairly new here too. And, still learning.
Have you had mono, had a tick bite? So many things can have these symptoms. I assume you are seeing a neurologist. Hopefully they look at blood work for inherited diseases, heavy metals, other tests that may indicate pre-diabetes.
Hope you find answers and relief. You have found the right place to search for answers and give you tips on care. Best wishes.

Do you recall being exposed to covid? I have had similar symptoms and a year later and after many tests, am not certain why, although there are several theories.

Meds help some people with symptoms. Is the specialist you are seeing a neurologist? I hope you ate able get relief. I know how distressing this can be.

Hi Hong, I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with @celia16, @rollo8, @nayers and others. Hoping you get some answers at your meeting with the specialist (neurologist?) next Tuesday. The best thing you can do to help yourself is learn as much as you can about the condition and become your own best advocate. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a lot of helpful information for newly diagnosed folks, including causes and treatments - https://www.foundationforpn.org/newly-diagnosed/.

You mentioned you didn't have any nutritional deficiencies. Vitamin B6 can cause neuropathy symptoms if you have high levels in your system. Do you take any supplements or drink a lot of energy drinks that contain Vitamin B6?

Thanks for your response. She hasn't suggested anything to me. I'll need to work with the Specialist (He's a Naturopath Doctor specialized in Neurological issues) and start from there.

Hi Celia,

I've never contracted Covid (not that I know of). I took several vaccine boosters across the years. The last time was in October 2024.

The specialist I'm seeing is a Naturopath Doctor specializing in neurological issues. Depending on how things go, he may order more tests or refer me to a neurologist at the University Hospital nearby.

Hi John,

Thank you for your welcoming notes. I don't drink energy drink. I took a multivitamin and B6/B12 is included. My initial bloodwork shows no deficiency in vitamins.

Hi Rollo,

Thank you for your response. I don't recall I have mono or tick bites. I'm really scared to see that so many people are diagnosed as "idiopathic", meaning no cause is found and are left to suffer. Contracting this disease at a relatively young age is devastating to me. I've been struggling to sleep in the last few days just thinking about the future :-(.

My neuropathy started after my second covid Moderna vaccine. Mild at first but has progressed from my feet to my waist. Numbness increasing every EMG. No motor involvement. Diagnosed ideopathic but it could be related to my autoimmune disease(mild...just some inflammation in my hands) and possibly hydroxychloroquine over 10 years. I do watch intake of B vitamins so I don't over do it but have stopped the hydroxy as my bloodwork is almost normal..only elevated ANA at this point. It is a very scary condition and mine by evening is so uncomfortable. I have had vascular ultrasound but no vascular problems. I am not a diabetice, alcoholic or on chemo (other causes). I stopped gabapentin...I don't have pain ; only numbness anD gaba doesn't do a thing.

I have non-diabetic neuropathy also. My neurologist says it's from long-time alcohol abuse (currently in recovery). There here well could be a vascular/arterial component to it also. Have u have Doppler ultrasounds done on your legs? Worth looking into. I am a nurse and do a lot of research on my own. You have to be your own advocate. Good luck. U shouldn't have to suffer. Referrals to neurologist and/or vascular (vein) specialists may be helpful also.
