I have Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), an autoimmune disease that thrives on causing inflammation. I gave up sugar almost three years ago as a portion of an anti-inflammatory diet. I had given up white flour several years earlier as a portion of my overall organic goals to reduce processed foods, and white flour is processed. With each item I watched my Lipid Panel reward me. I don't need a statin, my cholesterol is better than it has been in 25 years.

Giving flour up also reduced my sugar intake, so once I decided to eliminate sugar it was not too hard, but I will admit the first two weeks were a struggle as my body was not happy. Within a month it was easy to resist, within three months I no longer even wanted sugary treats.

The rewards of eating well are often fewer Big Pharma drugs. I never need to worry about Type 2 diabetes also.

I have always had higher than normal Cholesterol. When I was being diagnosed for PMR at Mayo they found I had blockage in the carotid. They did the testing for FH. The Mayo Dr. told me you cant fix FH with diet. That said I do believe the saying you are what you eat. I had tried to keep numbers down with a keto style diet that worked somewhat but to much fat for me. I was just doing my best with no sugars and breads. Could I have done better. Sure.. Maybe all plant diet. Obviously what I was doing was not working. 100% blocked in the right and 70% in the left. I have told my kids to get tested for FH. but its not a run of the mill test apparently. Unfortunately what we eat and our genetics are 2 tough things to get past.
