Prostatitis after radiation? Treatment?

Posted by jimcinak @jimcinak, Feb 11 1:10pm

Asking for info my overseas doctor sister.
She has an elderly friend who received radiation treatment for PCa (I assume traditional photon radiation- I don’t know how many treatments or technology) and now he has prostatitis. Apparently the friend’s primary care provider isn’t doing much for the prostatitis.
Any one out there who had radiation treatment who then (later) developed prostatitis? If so what was the treatment.

(FWIW: I had PCa and had proton treatment (5X) and years later had prostatitis. The quickee dipstick test of my urine (as is commonly done with UTI’s) came up negative. It took a several day culture to show the prostatitis. Treatment was with an antibiotic. The doc said a longer course of antibiotic was better than a short five day - like Cipro. )

Thanks for the clarity, Jim. Although I have not heard of this particular “itis” post radiation, it does seem possible that it, like other organs around it, can become inflamed from the procedure.
Don’t think Cipro would help that but it’s always possible that a latent infection could come to the forefront when cells get agitated.

I had that more than a year after radiation. Extremely inflamed prostate.

Q95oldies,
Do you recall what was the treatment? How quickly did it resolve?

Had a full flush at the ER. Not very comfortable. Took a few hours. That solved it.
I had several UTIs after initial radiation, but the Urologist said this was just a
badly inflamed prostate. Peeing a lot of blood. Had to have a catheter too.
Much better since. Good luck to you!!!
