Severe Pain After Every Bowel Movement

Posted by Blzeitlin @blzeitlin, Nov 10, 2012

I can't take this anymore. It has been almost 2 years and the doctors can't find anything. Whenever I have a bowel movement I am crippled for hours, many hours in pain and completely fatigued. CT Scans show nothing. My small bowel ruptured last year and I had major surgery. 6 months later I had surgery for an obstruction in my bowel. I don't believe they are related as I had the pain after bowel movements prior to the first surgery. I also have Diverticulous BUT not in the colon...my diverticulitis attacks have been in the small bowel. Anyway, I told you all of this just to give you all of the information...does anyone have any experience with stomach pain AFTER bowel movements? I really need help. Cleveland clinic Florida says they don't know what it is. Thank you

Have you tried diet and exercise? Avoid acidic foods and eat foods with high fibers and drink plenty of water. Try yoga. Yoga masterly be able to work with you. Plum juice can help with bowel movements too. I take fiber powders at times. Good luck and feel well.

I have exactly the same thing it’s so debilitating, I have had 4 years of excruciating and debilitating pain after bowel movements and it’s affecting every part of my life as I can’t function with this level of pain. I have had several CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, colonoscopies , endoscopies, Mals surgery , gallbladder removed and Drs still can’t work it out. I have been to so many different specialists.

I also have been told it’s IBS but my instinct tells me it’s so much more than that as the pain is so so extreme.

Interesting I also have a diverticulum in my duodenum which is part of the small bowel . On scans it says air filled diverticulum in duodenum. I have asked if this could be contributing as I’m always struggling to release air and burping or expelling air is so difficult, drs have said no.

My life has been turned upside down from this chronic pain and no one can work it out.

Do you have problems with the defecting as well? I have the redundant and tortured colon. I am also having defecation issues?
I am on year 4 of problems after having h pylori and then surgery for adhesions and an appendectomy. Have you been tested for dysergenic defecation? Could it be backing up into your system. I had problems before taking Linzess. However, I am still feeling awful and headed to the Mayo to hopefully get some help. My situation leaves me with 3 hours of sleep is a good night…

My son also has severe pain after bowel movements. He has a long history with diagnoses of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, which he definitely had, and Chron's which I always wonder if that ever was the issue or not. The pain has gotten better for some periods and then returned, most recently after a colonoscopy/endoscopy a week ago, where they "stretched" a Shatzi ring in his esophagus. The terrible pain after bowel movements has come back since then. Has anybody with this problem found any answers? This has been going on since he was a very young child. He has had bowel resections (where they always say they don't see any Chrons) and is on multiple meds for Cyclic Vomiting and Chrons. Any help would be most appreciated.

I am sorry you are suffering with this horrible problem; my son has it as well. Have you found any leads or answers for this issue. He did have some fairly long bouts with it being less pain but he always has some and now its back to full swing after a colonoscopy/endoscopy last week.

Yes, I have a redundant and torturous colon and my external anal sphincter doesn't relax properly. I am a female that had two vaginal deliveries with a rectocele that I don't think is the main problem
I spent weeks at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester with 22,000 usd in billing for tests at the beginning of 2024. My bp was high from the medication Linzess, I figured this out on my own and discontinued the medication. While I was there they did many cardiac tests and that wasn't what I was there for. I went there hoping to get physical therapy for dysergenic defecation which shows online the main place for this... leading me to go there. I was hugely disappointed with my visit there because I went hoping to get into that specific program to help me. The Drs. there both mentioned they thought I would be in the two week treatment for dysergenic defecation. Their PT person declined to help me so I went home an absolute mess. My husband and I both were shocked that the PT person seemed to have the last call on the decision to help and not the Drs. Where I live there is no PT with EMG and they knew this... they told me to go try that. I do not live in the USA. (I am back at home suffering, my problems are so bad I don't hardly even sleep due to the pressure I start feeling in my body.). Mainly, at the end the Dr mentioned I could have my entire large intestines taken out and be put on a bag. Otherwise, their comments were to do enemas and I haven't been doing those. I am taking magnesium, stool softeners 4 a day, Tryphala and senna too on occasion. This whole visit there was very distressing due to thinking I would have liked to make sure the therapy didn't work first before a drastic option to be put out there.
When I left they continued to schedule appointments that I canceled... for more tests.
Needless to say I was EXTREMELY disappointed and unimpressed with how that experience went.
If I were you I would check out Cleveland Clinic instead...

I am very sorry your son is having problems and I hope you can find the right answer to his problems.

Thank you so much for your reply and I am so sorry you are disappointed with the results of your stay. I can't say this surprises me as we spend many years travelling the country trying to find an answer for my son, who at the time was suffering from Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and nobody knew what that was at the time. Even then the pain with bowel movements was his main trigger. He eventually got treated in Missouri in the USA by the main doctor who specialized in this and he eventually did have some really good periods. But this last colonoscopy really triggered the pain again and this has happened in the past with colonoscopies. He has had several bowel resections for obstructions in the past but yet the doctors always say they see no evidence of Crohns in his intestines when they are inside his abdomen. I find it interesting that several people say they have this exact problem but nobody has any idea why.

I hope you find some answers. How did you get your response to get to my email? Will you get this one that way as well? Maybe we should keep in touch.
