Barrett’s esophagus

Posted by jvanstratten @jvanstratten, Mar 22, 2018

Looking for info and help with Barret’s esophagus. I can’t figure out just how serious this is. I have read way too much online! I don’t really know how strict my diet really has to be. It is really stressful-. Does anyone here have it? And exactly how serious is it?

I as diagnosed with Barrett’s high dysplasia in August. Since then, I have been on omeprazole (sic) 40mg x2 a day. I have also had two endoscopies with ablation. The procedures themselves are easy. It did take me about two full weeks after each one before I could eat solid foods.

I have cut out coffee, alcohol, tomato sauce, and spicy foods from my regimen. With the medication and procedures, I do not have any reflux. I am back for another procedure in February. It looks like every three months for a while.

Good luck.

My specialist put me on a ppi 40 mg twice daily, sucralfate liquid 20 ml 1 hr before meals and at bedtime and baclofen 5 mg 3 times during day and bedtime. I first took pantapazole ppi but got swollen ankles and feet. Changed to Prilosec OTC got nasal drainage and annoying cough. Now taking the ppi Nexium OTC two 20 mg twice daily plus the sucralfate and baclofen. In reading about Reflux and Barrett’s I have added Premier Research Labs Phylo Methylate 2 daily which is activated B vitamins, folate (5-MTHF) and Choline and vitamin D’3. I read several articles about the things that can help Barrett’s and that’s what I added with Doctors approval. I also follow all the guidelines online about eating and when and how much. I only drink water. My doctors agrees with my adding. I stopped sleeping on right side as that makes reflux worse. I ordered the triangle wedge pillow to raise upper body when I sleep. You might need some additional medical guidance. I had no metal Kasia with the Barrett’s. My specialist retired. I was diagnosed in Oct 2024. Took two months of medication to help my burning mouth. During the day if I get burning I chew a pepsid complete which relieves burning pretty quickly no more than twice daily taking pepsid complete. First 30 days after esophagus scope and reflux and Barrett’s scope I only ate soft foods and soup broths which felt the best going down my esophagus. I also was diagnosed with gastritis w hyperplasia during esophagus scope. I don’t think your doctor is doing enough for your Barrett’s. I also read on line that Barrett’s is treated with high dose ppi of 40 mg twice daily. Read about it and talk to your doctor. Its a long term treatment lifestyle. I did read about one doctor who did not use ppi in her treatment for a patient with bone loss because poi’s have side effects like that. That Dr proscribed higher doses of pepsid complete 3 times daily and at bedtime. I am not recommending a treatment for you. I am only telling you what my doctor prescribed and what I read about that is suppose to treat Barrett’s with goal of healing Barrett’s if at all possible.

I am sooo happy to find this forum. I am really sad about my diagnosis two weeks ago. My understanding is that while erosive esophagitis can be reversed — Barrett’s cannot. I am extra fearful because I witnessed my younger brother die of stomach cancer in his mid 30s (non drinker, non smoker, healthy and fit while eating organic and having a six pack abs etc — when he complained of stomach pain docs did not scope because of his age and he was treated with protonix for what they aaaimed was an ulcer. A few months later after liver pain he was diagnosed with stomach cancer and he died 3 1/2 months later).

Sooo … I’ll always have post traumatic stress from my reflux lead me to get scoped (although the docs don’t think this is related to my family history). I was recommended to have another endoscopy in 3-6 months for more extensive biopsies . So far it’s non dysplasia Barrett’s.

I’m scared but have gone full speed revision of my diet , habits, sleep at incline …

I lost my job two weeks ago (but start a new one soon luckily). I’ve been spending the last two weeks scouring the net and YouTube videos and have found a TON of great info. But I love seeing other people that have experience living with Barrett’s.

I am scared

I was diagnosed with Barrett’s several years ago. After a few years I had 3 RFA’s (Radio Frequency Ablation) done. They basically burn and scrape the brown tissue away at your esophagus and stomach connection then new pink healthy tissue grows back. I’m not sure about it being a cure for Barrett’s but so far so good years after this was done. Gerd they say causes the burned “ brown” tissue I was told. Which can maybe become cancerous. I take 40mg of Omeprazole every morning which helps with the acid reflux. Good luck and I hope you make out okay 👍 oh and I must say whenever I went to bed right after eating dinner or on a full stomach the “gerd” was the worst!!!! Wait AA couple hours then go to bed.

DOES ANYONE STILL EXPERIENCE REFKUX? 🥹🥹🥹since my diagnosis I have made all of the changes (stop eating at 5pm, practically sitting inside sleeping, PPI, strict diet) and still experiencing reflux SOME nights (versus every night— before).. it’s not as severe but still about one out of 3 or 4 nights. I wake up soo sad 😔 has anyone who has had long term Barrett’s control, still felt reflux at times?

Sucralfate liquid coats your esophagus and stomach from the acid. It’s a prescription.

I am 4 months in with a gastritis w hyperplasia. Acid reflux and Barrett’s diagnosis. I take two 20 mg Nexium OTC twice daily, baclofen 5m 3 times during day and one hour before bedtime. The biggie is the sucralfate liquid 20ml that I use 3 times a day before meals and at bedtime. In the beginning I had to take an extra dose of sucralfate in middle of night. Took a good month to start seeing results. At two months I was seeing better results. If I take less Nexium I feel burning. I also do everything regarding eating. I have the foam lift triangle pillow to raise my upper body. One has to get serious with everything!
