Silent reflux and famotidine

Posted by rop @rop, Feb 14 7:56pm

After having a feeling of a lump in my throat for four months, my ENT doctor just diagnosed me with silent reflux. She suggested I take famotidine. I tried it for two nights and both nights. I got very bad heart palpitations. needless to say, I don’t want to take it again. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions for a different med or natural product that could help.
Thank you.

Lemon is acidic and not good for reflux.

Don't eat a few hours before bedtime. I highly recommend Gaviscon advance, with alginate. You can take it before bedtime or other times you need it.
I found that pomegranate juice is helpful.
And a probiotic in the morning 1/2 hour before food.

If you have injury to your esophagus (Barrett's), then you probably should also take a PPI for a few weeks and then wean off it.

With Barrett’s why do you say to only take ppi for only couple of weeks? I was diagnosed with reflux and Barrett’s about 5 months ago. My treatment plan is liquid sucralfate 10 ml one hour before meals and at bedtime, ppi u using Nexium OTC now, two 20 mg Nexium OTC twice daily, and baclofen 5 mg 4 times a day, last one at bedtime. I also take folate and vitamin D. Treatment will last my lifetime.

Hi t98. The pH of a pomegranate ranges from 2.93 to 3.20, making it a moderately acidic fruit. I have reflux and don't think I would drink it.

You're right that it's moderately acidic. There is a view that taking a small amount helps, because of its anti-inflammatory properties. I found it helped, and mixed with some water.

I can add to my previous post that how long you need to take a PPI or other medication will depend on what your physician says is your situation, and whether other methods you try are working for you. Try also sleeping on a wedge/elevating the head of your bed, no coffee or chocolate and eat low acid foods. (Reverse osmosis water is acidic so try to drink more alkaline water than that.)

I had those symptoms many years ago lump in my throat and my doc sent me for endoscopy and found they found irritated esophagus so I was put on Protonix same as Omeprazole to heal. I was on that for two years. I went off aft that and then put on Famoudidine bc my PCP felt it was safer then Omep. But that stopped working for me after a while so I went back on Omep. Once a day. I have been taking that now for about 6 months. Diet is certainly something to watch even though you’re on a medication.
