Chronic diarrhea after treatment: What helps?

Posted by graybeard46 @graybeard46, Feb 16 7:28am

Not a pleasant topic but after prostate surgery and starting my fifth week of radiation I’ve had 3-4 bouts with diarrhea every night. Imodium not helping, Dr doesn’t seem to be concerned?? During the I’m usually fine , I eat very little at breakfast and lunch but a semi normal dinner at night, wonder if that explains at night only? Anyone taking anything besides Imodium ?

Talked to my RO today about this problem. He suggested Imodium and Metamucil which attracts water for a fuller stool. Best wishes.

I would stay away from Metamucil - it contains psyllium which can cause fermentation and gas - a real NO NO!

I think all of the suggestions here are valid in cases of “normal diarrhea” but radiation really changes the ballgame. Even my own suggestion for Kaopectate is probably not gonna work.
I think something stronger to reduce intestinal motility is what is needed - an RX for something like Lomotil. All the probiotics are going to do is produce more gas and yogurt, kefir, etc were expressly forbidden on my diet from Sloan as they contain live cultures which normally is a GOOD thing but not during this treatment.
Talk to your RO about getting a prescription for something stronger than OTC remedies; you’re not the first person with this issue!

I added Gasex which is working. RO suggested Metamucil and start with 1/4 Imodium and titrate up from there. I have been using Chia seeds as they absorb water well. RO's solution worked overnight until it didn't this morning. Looks like every 12 hours to start with. The awful thing about diarrhea is when you feel empty there can be left over stool in the rectum due to the bowels still working which gets one thrown off the island. 12 sessions to go and feeling wretched. "Onward through the fog"

Don’t think the Docs know much more than we do when it comes to diarrhea. When my young cat had the squirts, the Vet said powdered pumpkin to absorb extra water…didn’t work, needed steroid. When he got plugged up, Vet said powdered pumpkin to absorb extra water and bulk up the stool…..didn’t work, needed different food.
I mean, how can the same supplement be good for constipation AND diarrhea?? But they read the same internet BS we do so there you go. Good luck with the rest of your treatments!

Called my GP and he ordered a prescription for Lomotil, wonder why my radiologist didn’t. Will post if this pill works

Actually, taking pure psyllium and 1/4 dose of Imodium has worked great in 12 hours. Radiation was tearing me up the past few days. Can once again trust a fart.

Have you considered getting a Stool Culture done, this way you/Dr will become aware what type of bacteria or Virus is present ( it takes 3/4 days) ... This is the recommended path. ( if there is virus then you need antibiotics to be prescribed)
What ever happens...key thing is not to get dehydrated.. so suggest you maintain your electrolytes (Pedialyte or Gatorade)
Follow that diet that is diarrhea friendly your PCP should get involved and take you to the next step if this doesn't stop or getting better within 3 days
Best

Radiation diarrhea is different than viral. I told the RO about it, and he described the exact symptoms I had. It includes urgency with small minnow size stool and bowl incontinence where you can't make it 20 feet to the can. I've completed 16 of 25 sessions and miserable. Onward!
