I don't know, never had shingles. My aged auntie did, and she said it was a horrible experience, one she wouldn't wish on anyone. She added, sternly, to get vaccinated. Both my wife and I have had both types of vaccine, the Shingrix and the Zostavax.
For those reading, and this is an aside...sorry...aged adults should/might need to get boosters of several kinds about the time they are looking forward to retirement (inquire of your GP):
Pneumonia
Diphtheria
Tetanus
Pertussis (yes, Ye Olde Whooping Cough!! Ask your pharmacist or doctor)
MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)
Hepatitis (especially if you have never had any of them)
Shingles
Flu and RSV
We tend to have our eyes on other balls when nearing retirement, but there might not BE ONE if you get severely ill as your immune system ages. While it's still relatively young and responsive, expose it to these vaccines (that is my understanding of why it becomes more important for seniors, just as it is for kids)!
Please consult your family doctor or a nurse practitioner and find out if you have a deficit in your immunity.
