Chronic diarrhea after treatment: What helps?

Posted by graybeard46 @graybeard46, Feb 16 7:28am

Not a pleasant topic but after prostate surgery and starting my fifth week of radiation I’ve had 3-4 bouts with diarrhea every night. Imodium not helping, Dr doesn’t seem to be concerned?? During the I’m usually fine , I eat very little at breakfast and lunch but a semi normal dinner at night, wonder if that explains at night only? Anyone taking anything besides Imodium ?

I started taking Myrbetriq For urgency and incontinence, but I have found that it really reduces diarrhea greatly. I used to have a little bit all the time now I seldom ever have it.

Hey Graybeard, You can try Kaopectate as well but I don’t think it will matter much. I had 25 sessions (5 weeks) and on the very last day I started the nightly toilet sessions about an hour after dinner; it was not watery or loose like diarrhea but still a BM. Lasted for 2 weeks.
Don’t know how many more sessions you have but to avoid any accidents I would try to avoid solid food until dinner. There’s something called the gastro-colonic reflex and in normal times food entering the stomach signals the bowel to get moving. With radiation it’s a lot more pronounced!

Thanks Phil , I have 13 more days. Of radiation 6 1/2 weeks total, also getting pain in ankle and knee joints another side effects, this crap is draining my strength, then another hormone shot when radiation is done , I’m tempted to skip the sect shot since it stays in your system for 3 months, , despite this cancer is curable you wouldn’t know it , screws your life for a year or more

The way to make sure your cancer becomes a chronic problem not a fatal disease is by following the guidelines laid out for what works the best. Not taking the hormone shot could result in your cancer metastasizing much sooner than it would normally.

Have you had a decipher test to see how aggressive your cancer is and how soon metastasis could start developing. If you would have a really low number in the decipher score, then maybe dropping the hormone shot would make sense. If you’ve got a Gleason score above 3+4 It also could be a problem in the near future.

It is really strange that the radiation is affecting you so much. I also had about seven weeks, But I never noticed anything as a result. The most other people complained about when I was getting it was fatigue. Have you asked the RO why you’re having these side effect?

REPLY

RO said some are affected more than others not sure if I had a decipher test will ck my Gleason was 3/4 4/3. Average so mid range for aggressive

Talked to my RO today about this problem. He suggested Imodium and Metamucil which attracts water for a fuller stool. Best wishes.

If you can drink it, get some regular old fashion butter milk, or Kefir and drink lots of it. Your microbiome could be out of balance.

I’ll try anything, Imodium doesn’t help I take 6 every day , I’d drink elephant piss if it would work getting up 4-5 times every night is hell, before my surgery despite knowing I had cancer I could go all night maybe once needing to pee

I got Antibiotic Induced Colitis after my first biopsy and that's a form of living hell. You can restore your Microbiome a number of ways, Buttermilk, Kefir, Yogurt, Yakult, etc. They are all short acting. Instead of Immodium. You might ask your Dr about a RX for Bentyl. It reduces cramping and relaxes your stomach. It also helps you sleep and takes the pain out of your guts. It works quickly.
