I have and it took care of my symptoms for 4 months. It is so nice to have even a short term relief. My insurances covered the cost and I have them done in Phoenix.
Can you please provide the name of your provider who gave you the injections? I’ve been searching but haven’t been able to find someone who did them? I’ve heard more than 2 courses does the trick. Also was the procedure itself painful and did you have side effects?
Yes, I have been for several years with Dr Chen in Jacksonville Mayo. She does it under anesthesia so no pain felt. After procedure have a little cramping and spotting for few days that she gives pain meds for. I have it done every 6 months or so but can tell it’s wearing off around 5 months. My insurance pays for it now but it was a fight the first time but Mayo was great at getting insurance all the info that showed I met all the requirements. It takes about 2 weeks to tell a difference but it’s a huge improvement. It also helps relax the muscles enough for my bladder retention to be a lot better. It’s been a great thing for me.

I had a Botox shot approximately 10 yrs. Ago with no anesthesia in my urologists office. The needle was about 12 inches long. It was one of the worst procedures ever. I hadn't been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis yet and I had no relief at all from the procedure. I too have urine retention. Long story short and 2 urologists later. I was finally diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and for several months I would have infusions directly to my bladder several times a month. After awhile they took became ineffective so I went to the hospitals pain clinic and started on lyrica. Lyrica helps tremendously and I no longer have pain in my bladder that would have me doubled over with my heating pad as my only relief. Of course the lyrica has side effects too so I had to chose whether it was worth taking it. You take every day and not just on demand. I still have the problem of retaining urine so I have to double pee. Meaning that I urinate and then go back after 5 mins. Or so and pee again. Getting the IC diagnosis was key to getting relief so my advice is make sure that your urologist is ruling that out. It took me several urologists and 10 yrs to get mine but it was worth finally getting the relief

Find a pain management clinic that does them. Usually pain management clinics that deal with migraines do Botox. Sometimes you have to convince them to do the Botox for your needs. I started doing Botox in 2013 for my back shoulder muscles. At that time, it was more unorthodox, but I found doctors who were willing to write for the prior authorization. These days it’s pretty common at a pain management clinic to offer the Botox injection and they will know how to write the order so that it’s medically necessary for your need and insurance will cover it. I love it and I’ve had it done for various body muscles..

@aprilchristy it seems a lot of us have to suffer with BS when it comes to interstitial cystitis! I was put on antibiotics twice for an infection I never had. It’s angering that doctors care so little about us that they don’t see a common affliction among women. One day I picked up the phone and called around in response to an advertisement and found a doctor that diagnosed me over the phone with IC I went to his office for six months and he put DMSO inserted vaginally every week, then every couple weeks then I stopped I found after 30 years that I had high uric acid levels in other words, gout when I started taking the allopurinol my IC stopped. I get symptomatic when I don’t pay attention and don’t drink enough water or eat/drink acidic foods or wines. Then I take peridium for a day or two remember to stop with the acidic items drink more water and I’m fine till the next flare.
Absolutely lifestyle changes like watching what you eat a d drink is also important when you have IC. Drinking a glass of orange juice can result in a flare up for me. I also have a prescription filled for hyophen that is a large. Blue pill and works as an anasthetic for the bladder . Problem with this pill is that you have to drink tons of fluids to get the pill thru your bladder. When you pee blush green color you know that it is working. This can take hours so no immediate relief there. The lyrica seems for me anyway to be the most effective in keeping the agonizing pain away. I think that there is no one answer for people with this problem but the very first thing us getting the correct diagnosis. My current urologist heard my symptoms and everything that I had tried over the years including pelvic floor therapy and confirmed her guess. With a procedure with me I see general anasthesia. She also stretched my bladder. She said that my bladder looked red and angry. This is when I began the instillmenta directly to my bladder. As said they only helped me for awhile and the effectiveness stopped after a couple of months. That's when I began taking lyrica. Everyone's journey can be different but just don't let your doctor dismiss you as some whiner
