Discouraged by Prolia & Alendronate side effects

Posted by hmbrglr @hmbrglr, Feb 16 7:09am

I don’t like to complain with so many people finding benefits from these meds but I have been trying to go with the flow and not having good effects. I developed a severe skin rash after Prolia and switched to Alendronate now it’s my 7th week. I get very lose stools d bad stomach h aches and feel lousy . It seems to get worse each week ( I take a weekly dose ) snd follow all the directions. I want to go off and take my chances to see what will happen. I k ow this isn’t advisable but at this point idk!!

Are you saying that those are the first osteoporosis drugs you've taken?

Have you spoken with your doctor about this? What is her/his rationale for suggesting these drugs. Depending on one's medical history, the current thinking is to start on a bone builder like tymlos, forteo or evenity. Please tell us more. There is lots of experience and support here.

Hello
How many injections of Prolia have you had? How long have you taken Alendronate?
What you describe is exactly what happened to me.
3 injections of Prolia, multiple infections and autoimmune trigger that left me with Lichen Planus and 50% less hair. Alendronate caused stomach issues, dizziness, and I lost 15 pounds. I stopped after 8 months. Took nothing afterward, had enough
2 years later I had 6 pelvic fractures, doctor admitted they were most likely rebound fractures from the Prolia.
The risk is real. Please explore your options carefully. I know this is a tough journey.
Hugs

I’ve had 2 injections if Prolia and 7 th week . My dr suggested the drug that I would inject daily but I m no sure I can do this for the rest of my life. I never have dealt well with drugs i am so sorry you have had a terrible experience.are you able to exercise now? What do you do to ease your pain?

Since fracturing I’ve tried 3 other osteoporosis drugs.
Forteo(teraperitide),daily injections- caused extremely high calcium and heart issues, had to stop by 4 months,
Actonel (risedronate) took for 6 months, same issues as Fosamax, and finally Evista(raloxifene) taken for 8 months developed stomach and digestive issues, dizziness and fatigue
I am 65 but after researching for a year, I’ve decided to take HRT. I’m very hopeful that this will at least stop bone loss. I am aware of the risks, but my doctor wanted me to take Evenity, which carries similar risks to HRT, and since I’ve had such bad luck with 5 other osteoporosis drugs, I decided to try something different. I went to a hormone specialist to discuss the HRT. It’s really the only thing I have left.
As far as exercise, I can do almost anything that I did before the fractures, just with some modifications. I do have pain in the hips and back, but this is muscle and tendon pain caused by the fractures and not the bones themselves. Everything healed well.
If the osteoporosis isn’t prevented, then keeping up with it for the rest of our lives will certainly be a struggle. I wish I had started HRT when I was still osteopenia, I believe I could have avoided all this.

I too wish I had been started on bhrt after my osteopenia dx....instead my uc Davis physician said don't fall when I asked what treatment was available. This was 12 years ago.

It sounds like I should have tried that as well during my osteopenia diagnosis. I keep fluctuating between giving up or trying a 3rd option. I just don’t know. I have been on these drugs for 1-1/2 years so maybe I just should quit. ?!?!?!?

I’m trying to figure out if the fatigue, aches and constipation are related to taking alendronate (bisphenol) or something else - a mild virus??- going on. I am 76yr old in good health other than osteoporosis qI take the alendronate once a week, didn’t have any immediate reactions but wonder if this is a cumulative effect. Probably should discuss with my Dr!

I. have been on HRT for for 35 years without any issues. My gynecologist put me on it primarily to help with bone mass. I have also taken other drugs: Fosamax, Boniva, Reclast, and Prolia. I now have osteopenia. The drugs, as you note, have side effects. I'm exploring options now.
