Since fracturing I’ve tried 3 other osteoporosis drugs.
Forteo(teraperitide),daily injections- caused extremely high calcium and heart issues, had to stop by 4 months,
Actonel (risedronate) took for 6 months, same issues as Fosamax, and finally Evista(raloxifene) taken for 8 months developed stomach and digestive issues, dizziness and fatigue
I am 65 but after researching for a year, I’ve decided to take HRT. I’m very hopeful that this will at least stop bone loss. I am aware of the risks, but my doctor wanted me to take Evenity, which carries similar risks to HRT, and since I’ve had such bad luck with 5 other osteoporosis drugs, I decided to try something different. I went to a hormone specialist to discuss the HRT. It’s really the only thing I have left.
As far as exercise, I can do almost anything that I did before the fractures, just with some modifications. I do have pain in the hips and back, but this is muscle and tendon pain caused by the fractures and not the bones themselves. Everything healed well.
If the osteoporosis isn’t prevented, then keeping up with it for the rest of our lives will certainly be a struggle. I wish I had started HRT when I was still osteopenia, I believe I could have avoided all this.

I too wish I had been started on bhrt after my osteopenia dx....instead my uc Davis physician said don't fall when I asked what treatment was available. This was 12 years ago.

I. have been on HRT for for 35 years without any issues. My gynecologist put me on it primarily to help with bone mass. I have also taken other drugs: Fosamax, Boniva, Reclast, and Prolia. I now have osteopenia. The drugs, as you note, have side effects. I'm exploring options now.
