Gall bladder surgery

Posted by marisols @marisols, Feb 10 11:11am

Just had gall bladder surgery on Friday the 7th of February. Yesterday I ate something and was nauseous. Today I have been nauseous all day. They never gave me instructions on what to eat for now. Any help? Just wrote my doctor office.

Welcome to Mayo Connect. After I had gallbladder removed, my tolerance for some food changed. I have problems with dairy and greasy food. Like you, I do not remember anyone giving me post-surgery advice. You are smart to reach out to provider for advice. At first, it might be trial and error.

Cleveland Clinic has good article with suggestions:

What type of food and drink did you eat?

Yesterday I had a piece of cheese and tried coffee. Also in the evening tried a bite of pizza. I didn’t know because no one told me otherwise. Today I tried coffee again and 1 slice of bread and couldn’t eat it. The coffee I took 1 sip and threw it out. I had a broth which went well. Read the article thank you

Could be from the anesthesia? Greasy food bothered me after I had mine out. Best of luck.

I had gallbladder removal surgery 1 month ago, Jan.15. I'm 61 and have absolutely no energy. A persistent side effect I'm trying to overcome is the aluminum, acidic taste I'm left with ever since the surgery. This terrible taste effects the taste of water, any liquids and food. Needless to say I'm having a hard time fortifying myself with anything. My doctors told me to take Omeperazole and Pepcid to reduce any acid reflux but that has not eliminated this terrible taste. Something that improved my energy about 10% was a dietician told me to take B12 vitamins daily, the sublingual. That with a multivitamin. I just have to get some liquids down in me. Is anyone dealing with this side effect?

You may want to avoid any foods that are fried, greasy, cream sauces, gravy and even dairy products. These foods will not digest well without a gallbladder. It's best to try clear broths, grilled chicken, grilled salmon fruits like canteloupe, honeydew are good while you're healing. I'm 1 month away from my gallbladder removal surgery and my progress has been slow because I have a horrible side effect of an aluminum, acidic taste in my mouth that impacts food and liquids. It's tough but I praying it will go away. My doctors really don't have any suggestions for me. Hang in there and take good care!

Sandybeach2 is right. That’s exactly what I had to do.
