For those with Radiculopathy…..

Do you feel your symptoms symmetrically in both feet? I would have thought that the cause of my numbness would be something systemic yet my neurologist very confidently said it’s all coming from my L5 area. I have back pain which comes and goes. He did not order an MRI.

Will you want an MRI ordered from your primary?

I really should ask I suppose. Because I am in no pain there is no sense of urgency, on my part, or theirs.

I have cervical and lumbar stenosis and had surgeries on both. Any compression of nerves and spinal cord at neck and lower back levels can affect feet bilaterally depending on what is compressed and where/how.

It would be good for you to see an orthopedic spine specialist for X-rays and MRIs of cervical and lumbar spine. A neurologist can do EMGs/nerve conduction studies which can determine nerve compression radiculopathy but does not necessarily detect everything happening in the spine. For example, I had severe stenosis, degenerative disc disease and neurogenic claudication in my lumbar spine but my EMG of lower limbs was “normal.”

I had an MRI for sciatica and other back pain. It showed Sacrel insufficiency
fracture as well as stenosis of the discs and Osteoarthritus of the spine.
I also had the EMG/nerve conduction study on the right side leg and hip area
which didn't show any specific. The pain specialist said nothing can be done
for the sciatica and suggested pool therapy for the back.
The fractures have healed. I think something is infringing on the sciatica
nerve on the right. Don't know where to go ftom here...also I am 85 but
am in good shape otherwise.

There is MRN imaging for the nerves. I'd find out what is impinging the nerves before deciding that nothing can be done.

Interesting, I hadn’t known about that specific test. Doubt my insurance will cover it but sometimes paying privately for tests is not that expensive, I will enquire.

I have pain and and tightness in both feet but not as bad on the left side. The stiffness when at
its worse will go halfway up my calf.

I have numbness in both Feet into both knees worse in the left leg than the right leg. I’ve been walked in on my treadmill 4 Days a week 40 to 50 minutes varying speed & inclne and every other day I go to the gym. I do a total body workout with emphasizing on my legs.
This seems to make my balance better and and the numbness and not as bad plus strengthening my legs. I Was walking with a distinct limp and that has disappeared overtime.

Same, both feet affected, worse on the left. Was your Radiculopathy confirmed by an EMG or MRI or both?

I just had a positive MRI for T11-12 focal herniation with cord impingement. My feet have been numb (worse on right) with neuropathy and have had balance issues since mid Dec.
First ER visit on Sept 29th, CT was normal. Been pushing for a MRI since then and PCP and another doctor wouldn't approve it. They finally referred me to Neuro and that doc was like, I think you herniated a disc.
Now I have a referral for another more detailed MRI, and to a neurosurgeon.
