Whipple surgery and Omeprazole

Had a whipple surgery in November of 2023. Was prescribed 20mg of Omeprazole and told to take two capsules in morning basically forever. Curious if all whipple patients do this or if there was something specific to my situation?

After my Whipple in 2012, my surgeon prescribed omeprazole and wanted me to take it for one year. Stomach acid, GERD, etc were never issues for me. He explained it was to prevent issues with healing and lacerations where the anastomose was created between the bottom of the stomach and the intestine. After the year, I came off it in June 2013 and never had issues.

My surgeon said I could quit all of my medications that I did not take before surgery. Relatively healthy other than pancreas cancer which is a big one. I only take daily vitamins but I do also use Creon not at all three meals only use when I eat something that I need it for. I had a lady in my room that had the Whipple surgery 3 weeks after I did but her tumor was not cancerous and her Doctor told her to take Pepcid for the rest of her life. Just was wondering why there are so many different answers for this question. I know everything doesn't work for everyone but why so many different answers.

There are two reasons I can think of that a proton pump inhibitor would be prescribed for a certain period of time after having Whipple surgery or needing it for life. Whipple surgery results in creating an anastomose between the bottom of the stomach and the jejunum. The incision and the suturing is affected by stomach acid leading to ulceration. For those where stomach acid has never been an issue, the recommendation is for taking a PPI for one year to allow for sufficient healing. This is to prevent ulceration and leaking of stomach contents causing serious sequela. For those with a history of acid, GERD, etc., it is done as a precaution for long-term management. I never had issues with stomach acid and asked my surgeon why a PPI was recommended. That was the answer I got and why I took it for the recommended one year period.

Thank you! I see my oncologist on Thursday I will ask if I should be doing this. And see if she says something different than my surgeon.
