Lateral Approach Total Knee Replacement

Posted by ouch89 @ouch89, Nov 6, 2024

I accompanied my wife for an Orthopedist consulatation at AOS (Advanced Ortho & Spine) for her bone on bone discomfort. They promote a New Era in Knee Replacement with Side Incision, claiming less pain and faster recovery with no muscle cutting. We reviewed patients on video walking naturally with no limping post two weeks TKR along with their testimony. I have had three traditional (vertical incision over the front of the knee) TKR surgeries, one being a revision, with the usual painful long term recovery.
Has anyone had this side incision procedure and will you share your pro/con experience. Thank you

Hello @ouch89. The lateral approach knee replacement seems like a relatively new approach. It is difficult to find a bunch of literature on this approach, unlike the abundance of traditional knee replacements like you have undergone.

@ouch89, when your wife's provider was discussing this approach, did they talk about success rate vs. the traditional anterior approach?

No, not seeing any statistics makes me skeptical.

I am VERY interested in this procedure. Please let me know which location of Advanced Ortho & Spine so I can further research. I have been looking into Jiffy Knee Replacement (cheesy name, I know), but seems like a lot of folks are opting for it. Anyway, I came across a video on YouTube by a surgeon in Australia touting the advantages of LATERAL incision (vs. MEDIAL which JKR uses). If your interest is piqued, there are Facebook groups with plenty of discussion on JKR.

Please do you homework. Reports of great outcomes could be hype, and it is a more complicated procedure.
Good luck.

What is truth? Research is only as good as submitted reports. I am wondering if self-reporting is severely underreported?

I've been saying this for a long time! You asked me for a name, but that's why I cautioned you to do your homework. You can review every Hospital/clinc/ doctor, etc. and they all state they're the best. One of my very first comments on this forum was titled "It's a crap shoot."
After reading about and listening to the many dissatisfied TKR patients over the years I maintain the reported success rate is overstated. Not one of the many TKR recipients I communicate with, including myself, has ever been surveyed whether they are satisfied with their prosthetic knee(s).
There can be contentious opinions from those that are satisfied with their new knees who state that the only ones complaining are the dissatisfied recipients. My answer is, show me a "fact checked" survey!

Amen! I came within a week of having TKR and a friend told me to check this website. I don't do social media but thank heavens for this site. It took me 2 days of reading these posts to cancel the surgery and seek another solution. I just heard of one unusual success today and will post again if it sounds right. I also connected with the 'crap shoot' theory and this surgery is not going to be an option for me.

I'm sure I've said this before, but I have had two respected knee surgeons tell me to wait as long as I can before having a TKR because there are so many new and innovating treatments coming to help with recovery. I just had a pin placed in my hand/finger due to an injury...this 'pin' will dissolve after helping to heal a torn cartilage..when I had this same surgery years ago in another part of my hand, I had to go back in for surgery to remove the pin...that is just a sample of 'progress'...

I think you're making a wise choice. If the pain is not too intense hold out as long as you can. I tore my ACL while running and my surgeon convinced me to have a TKR because I was going under the knife anyway. I made a bad decision! Good luck.
