Lung nodules from thyroid cancer found 4 years after thyroidectomy
Hello,
I had a thyroidectomy 4 years ago with multiple lymph nodes also removed back in 2021. My endocrinologist had me do a PET scan due to my thyroglobulin levels being "high"; the results showed lunge nodules that both the endocrinologist and pulminologist could not identify. I was referred out to endocrinologist oncologist who reviewed my medical history and told me the lung nodules are thyroid cancer that was probably there from the beginning (2021), however was not caught because the imaging done back then was always of my neck. I had the iodine ablation post-surgery and then two more rounds of low-grade iodine radiation, with clear results coming back each time with the whole body scans. The PET scan (2024) is where the lung nodules were found.
My TSH is low (0.2) ad thyroglobulin is 7.9 - oncology has taken over my care (previous endocrinologist did not specialize in thyroid cancer, thus the referral) and is monitoring my thyroid labs and continuing with TSH suppression. He told me that given the presence of the lung nodules, this will everntually be treated further down the road with either chemo pill or "whatever treatment has been developed at that time".
I gues this is a long-winded way of asking, can anyone give insight on what is going on? I feel like I was told there is still thyroid cancer in my body but nothing is to be done until it is more advanced. Basically I was told that as long as I am not in pain, suddenly lose weight, or have new symptoms, I am to go about as normal...it all feels a bit hazy and confusing.

I guess since thyroid cancer moves slowly they are not aggressive with treatment. I had nodules on my thyroid for ten years. Felt better when they were removed.
I would get a second opinion. There are some cancers that are "watched". But I don't know if this is one of them.
Second opinion should be from a top cancer hospital.
Best wishes for full recovery.
Weight loss doesn't always happen. I have PTC that had spread to central and right lymph nodes. I actually was gaining about 5 pounds a month and dieting before cancer was found. I had hypothyroidism. I would look into a second opinion from a cancer hospital. I feel that every person and each cancer responds differently. We should be given individual care. Good luck and I wish you the best in getting to the bottom of this.
@katsuzy1219, have you considered getting a second opinion? How are you doing?
